Chapter 7: Do You Need to Check Yourself?

Selene’s POV

Alexander Lancaster met my scrutinizing gaze, and his pupils flickered, almost causing him to press the gas pedal instead of the brake.

The car jerked suddenly, and I was thrown forward, only to be pulled back by the seatbelt. I patted my chest and turned to look at Alexander Lancaster, whose complexion had visibly changed, and his breathing seemed heavier. I was more certain of my guess now.

He was reacting so strongly, and I

But then I noticed that, in the struggle, my ruined dress was slipping down to my waist, exposing half of my chest.

Fuck!

I quickly tried to adjust the damn low-cut wedding dress, but out of the corner of my eye, I saw that the man’s suit pants were tight, with a noticeable bulge forming.

Alexander must’ve noticed what I was thinking. His eyes darkened, and his voice became hoarse as he said, “Open the storage compartment in front of you. There’s a document inside.”

I quickly bent down to open the

compartment.

Alexander added, “Take a look.”

ment?

I grabbed the document, and when I saw that it was a medical check-up report, I froze.

Every item on the check-up was detailed and showed no problems. He was healthy, and some of his stats even surpassed typical Alpha standards.

How could there be no issues?

I couldn’t help but feel disappointed… After the marking ceremony, would we make love?

The red light turned on, and Alexander Lancaster glanced at me, a smirk forming on his lips. “If you don’t believe me, you can always check for yourself!”

Check for myself?

How would I check?

A series of adult scenarios flashed through my mind, and my face turned bright red. I quickly covered my face with my hands, pretending to stay calm as I replied, “No, I believe you!”

He chuckled lowly, then confessed, “There’s nothing wrong with my body. The reason I wanted to go to the council is because I’m serious about this. And…”

He paused briefly, his fingers lightly tapping the steering wheel.

“I have a son who needs someone to take

care of him.”

What?

A son…

My mind went blank.

Until the green light appeared and the scenery outside the window flew by, I

snapped back to reality.

I was going to be a stepmother?

“If you can’t accept it, you can back out anytime,” Alexander continued.

I bit my lip, furrowing my brows in

confusion.

Back out?

Did I even have the option to back out

now?

Though the paternity test results weren’t out yet, Chloe Parker had already moved into the Brooks family, and my mother, Eleanor Brooks, had taken her in as her

own daughter.

My biological parents, whom I had never met, had never come looking for me. That probably meant they didn’t want me as their daughter.

And I didn’t want to continue entangling myself with Jaxon Lancaster either.

I glanced at Alexander Lancaster again.

A man as handsome as him, his child would probably be beautiful too. Being a stepmother didn’t seem so bad.

I smiled brightly. “I’ll do my best to be a …. stepmother.”

Alexander raised an eyebrow, his mood immediately lifting. He gently said, “Then I’ll take you to buy some clothes first, and then we’ll head to the council center.”

I was still wearing the wedding dress, and it had been torn when I got out of the car. It wouldn’t be appropriate to go to the

council center in it.

Since time was running out, Alexander took me to a mall nearby.

I took off the white dress and looked at it-the dress that was supposed to accompany me toward happiness. Without hesitation, I tossed it in the trash can. Then I changed into a simple black cocktail dress that Alexander had chosen.

When I stepped out, his eyes brightened, and he couldn’t help but praise,

“Beautiful.”

I snuck a glance at the price tag-over a thousand dollars.

It was the kind of price I wouldn’t have even blinked at before.

But now… now that I was about to leave the Brooks family-and my new mate didn’t exactly look like someone rolling in money-this dress suddenly felt way too expensive.

“Maybe… we can try something else,” I suggested, trying my best to hide the

awkward knot twisting in my stomach.

But Alexander just shrugged, completely unfazed.

“I like this one. Too bad though… I already paid for it.”

I blinked, stunned.

Wait… is my new mate actually rich?!
