Chapter 11
Once, Lyra had damaged her uterus to save him. He’d sworn to treat her well, to live child–free together forever.
Who could have imagined that before forever even came, they’d already be separated by death itself?
Mason maintained that position all night. He’d made up his mind–Lyra’s parents were abroad and surely couldn’t be reached immediately by the airline. If he could get someone to handle it, he’d definitely be able to claim Lyra’s remains. He wanted to hold a funeral for her first. He wouldn’t keep Willow’s child either–he’d spend his whole life with Lyra.
Having decided, Mason left his room. The housekeeper rushed up to him anxiously.
“Mr. Vale, thank God you’re out! Something’s happened to Ms. Harper!“,
“What?” Mason frowned. He really didn’t want to hear this news right now.
“Ms. Harper–she’s gone into premature labor and is hospitalized! Your father wants you to get there immediately!”
Mason paused for a moment, then headed to the hospital anyway.
As soon as he arrived, he saw Willow lying in the ICU moaning while his parents paced anxiously.
“I always said Lyra was no good. Even dead, she’s still causing trouble for Willow! She couldn’t have kids herself, so why was she always targeting Willow!” his mother lamented.
Mason had never told the Vale family that Lyra had damaged her uterus saving him. Now he didn’t want them slandering Lyra anymore.
He said in a low voice, “About the child, Lyra previously was because of…”
A doctor suddenly emerged from the ICU, interrupting him. “Who’s the family of Willow Harper! The pregnant woman is fine, no need to worry. She can be discharged today!”
The doctor turned away muttering, “What kind of family is this? The pregnant woman is perfectly fine, yet they put her straight into the ICU, wasting
resources.”
These words reached Mason’s ears. He stopped mid–motion as he was about to join his parents in receiving Willow, turned around suspiciously, and
called out to the doctor.
“What did you just say?”
The doctor paused. “You’re the family, right? The pregnant woman is completely fine. Don’t make such a big fuss next time!”
After speaking, the doctor hurried off to other wards. Mason looked through the glass at Willow’s weakly smiling face, and a bold suspicion formed in
his mind.
He called over the butler. “Investigate everything that happened before. Every single thing.”
As he spoke these words, he forced himself to control his voice to keep it from trembling.
With Mason’s parents taking care of Willow, she was quickly discharged and went home.
Mason didn’t go back–he didn’t want to see anyone right now, especially not the cozy scene of his parents doting on Willow.
He stayed in the underground parking garage, sitting in his car and waiting.
The butler worked quickly, returning with the investigation results within a few hours. “Mr. Vale, everything you requested is here.”
Mason nodded. The butler glanced at him, swallowing the words on the tip of his tongue, and retreated.
Now alone in the car, Mason transferred the files to his phone and began watching surveillance footage of all the previous incidents.
The more he watched, the more shocked he became.
The more he watched, the angrier he got.
The more he watched, the more desperate he felt.
Everything that had happened was all Willow’s elaborate scheme!
Lyra had never hurt her!
Scene by scene, he watched the woman who’d been falsely accused in the videos, feeling his heart finally being pierced through. He had actually believed Willow’s lies, disappointing Lyra over and over again.
When the video ended, Mason didn’t even have the courage to watch it a second time. Trembling, he buried his face in his hands.
Lyra’s attempts to explain and clear her name… Lyra’s disappointed and hurt expressions… Lyra’s pained look after being punished…
What had he done!
Mason slammed the steering wheel, then floored the gas pedal.
He would never forgive Willow!
