Sophie stared at him in shock.
“Pamela? Do you mean that online influencer you were dating back then?
“What does she have to do with Tania?
“I was the one who told her to leave! It’s been years, nothing left to cover up. Mrs. Garcia spotted her as the woman Mr. Garcia kept on the side and told me in private. So I looked into her and found a whole stack of gynecological records.
“She knew she wasn’t innocent, so when I gave her 30 thousand, she left without a fuss.”
Fred stood frozen, speechless at first.
After a while, he finally asked, “Why didn’t you tell me?”
“You’ve always been proud. I didn’t want to make things worse. Don’t forget, I forced you to get a full physical check- up back then. “Thankfully, your tests came back clean; you didn’t catch anything unpleasant.”
Then she paused, her expression shifting. “Wait a second… What did you mean earlier? Do you think Tania tricked you? Are you saying you never truly loved her when you got married?”
She slammed her teacup onto the table, her voice filled with disappointment. “Fred, are you serious? How can you be so blind?
“You’ve known Tania for so long. Can’t you see what kind of person she is?”
Yeah, he used to know her better than anyone.
There was always something pure in her eyes, something the world hadn’t ruined yet.
When she talked to him, she’d tilt her head just a little, completely open and trusting.
She’d always stop to pet stray cats and whisper to them softly.
He used to love that about her–that she saw the world with kindness.
His thoughts drifted, and all the anger he had built up over the years began to melt away.
Yet he didn’t want to admit he was wrong. He told himself it wasn’t his fault–he wasn’t a mind reader. And she had never once told him her side of the story.
He kept telling himself that Tania cared about him deeply. If he swallowed his pride, she might forgive him and let him back into her life.

According to the due date, the baby was supposed to arrive in about a month.
On the drive back from his parent’s place, he called his assistant. “Book the best postpartum recovery center for two months. And start the paperwork to give Tania 5% of my shares.”
A short while later, his assistant called back. “Mr. Burnett, her phone number no longer works. It’s been canceled.”
Fred’s heart sank as he drove straight to her apartment.
He rang the bell repeatedly, but no one answered. Finally, a neighbor opened the door and said, “Tania hasn’t been back in a while.”
He drove to her parent’s house next.
They were surprised to see him but welcomed him in politely.
But they hadn’t seen Tania either. Even they didn’t know where she’d gone.
Since they’d had a son, they hadn’t really paid much attention to their daughter.
And Tania had been married into the Burnett family for six years without ever having a baby.
Now that she was finally pregnant, she wanted a divorce and just disappeared.
Clara Dowson sighed and said softly, “Tania’s too spoiled. She always gets her way. Who walks out on a marriage while pregnant?”
Fred got up. “It’s nothing serious. We just had a fight. I’ll find her.”
But truthfully, he wasn’t sure at all.
She hadn’t gone back to her family.
So where else would she be in New York?
Where had she even been staying the past two months?
That’s when it hit him–he had no idea who Tania’s friends were or what she even liked to do. All these years, he’d never really paid attention.
Something heavy seemed to press down on his chest.
Light, barely there, yet impossible to ignore.
Trying to shake it off, he headed to the hospital where Tania had been getting her prenatal checkups.
They’d have her emergency contact info, maybe even her current address.
Using some personal connections, he managed to pull her medical records. But what he discovered left him stunned.
The day before they signed the divorce papers, Tania had gotten an abortion.

He never imagined that Tania–so gentle she wouldn’t even harm an insect–would have the strength to end the life of their unborn child.
Before they split, the six–month–old baby used to kick in her belly.
Fred had felt those tiny movements himself, in quiet awe of the life growing inside her.
It wasn’t until now that he finally understood–he truly regretted everything.
