scholarship.”
I raised my eyebrows.
“I did what?”
“You know what you did!”
Gavin walked in.
I hadn’t seen him in over a month.
He was colder, even more distant, looking at
me like a stranger.
く
Tiffany ran to him and grabbed his hand.

With Gavin there, she was stronger.
She lifted her chin at me.
“My back is scarred, because of you. You
haven’t even been punished, and you won’t
even apologize?”
I said, “You did it yourself, why would I
apologize?”
Tiffany seemed to expect it.
She blushed, started crying, and started
shaking.
Г
Like she was too upset to speak.
Some of my classmates couldn’t take it.
One said, “Kayleen, don’t be so mean.”
“No one would hurt themselves.”
“Yeah, just apologize, don’t act so tough.”
Tiffany’s bestie, Allison Shaw, glared at me.
“You’re just jealous that Gavin likes Tiffany.”
“You were a nobody. Gavin helped you. You
can’t expect him to like you back. He can
date whoever he wants!”
Allison was trying to stir people up.
く
But I knew Tiffany had put her up to it.
They planned to ruin my reputation.
Her words hit a nerve with people around us,
and they started whispering about me.
“Kayleen looks nice, but she’s terrible.”
“She’s so two-faced!”
Gavin stared at me, frowning.
Tiffany hid behind him, smirking.
The head of my department grabbed me and
whispered, “Kayleen, just apologize. It’ll look
bad if you make a scene.”
<
Allison yelled, “Why can’t we make a scene!”
“Just because she’s the teacher does not
mean you can take her side!
“You make all teachers look bad!”
My teacher was angry, but I stopped her.
I winked at her.
“I have a video to show you.”
My teacher looked down, confused.
Slowly, her shoulders relaxed.
She looked up, smiling like she knew
something I didn’t.

Chapter 2
Tiffany thought we were full of it. She tossed
her hair over her shoulder, showing off her
necklace.
“Kayleen, if you apologize to me in front of
the whole school and promise to leave Gavin
alone, I’ll think about forgiving you.”
I didn’t care about her empty threats, I just
stared at the necklace.
It was the birthday present I’d given Gavin,
bought with two months of summer jobs.
But it was his, and he could do whatever he
wanted with it.
Done with the dramatics, I sent the video of
Tiffany staging her attack to her class group.
Ding. Everyone in the room opened it.
Immediately, everyone gasped.
Tiffany didn’t want to look, but she knew
something was wrong and opened it up.
Her face turned white.
She pretended to be calm, closed her phone.
But her voice betrayed her.
“It’s fake! She faked it! Like I’m gonna pour
thumbtacks on myself!”
She was crying and grabbing her chest.
く
I shrugged.
