I did not say anything. I just stayed silent.
After a while, Dr. Wilson came back on the phone and told me that they needed a family member to sign off and consent to the surgery. I refused firmly again. “First of all, I’m not his family. His surgery has nothing to do with me. Also, he has a girlfriend. You can ask her to sign.”
Nathan seemed to have heard that, because he started screaming hysterically, calling my name with desperation. “No! You’re my girlfriend! We were going to get married a few days ago! Yvonne, have you forgotten?”
Of course I haven’t.
How could I forget being humiliated and treated like a fool seven times?
I hung up, unwilling to listen to his screaming.
That night, Anne called me after hearing about this and said that I had done a good job and that Nathan deserved his punishment. She also told me not to go soft at the last minute.
After I finished my call with Anne, Nathan’s mother, Mary Moore, called me. She sounded like she was crying. “Yvonne, did you and Nathan have a fight? I heard that you haven’t seen him in a long time, and you refused to see him even when he’s sick now. You didn’t even answer his doctor’s calls!”
I couldn’t help but soften slightly when I heard her voice.
Mary had always treated me well since I was little. Back when we were still in school, she was always making us delicious food in all kinds of creative
ways.
The first time we failed to get married because Nathan stood me up, Mary had rushed over and scolded him the entire night when she found out.
She held me and said, “Don’t worry, Yvonne. You’re the only daughter–in–law I’ll accept. If he doesn’t marry you, then he’s no son of mine!”
At the time, out of selfishness, I did not tell Mary that Nathan didn’t really like me. His heart really belonged to Lucille, and it was because of her that he stood me up.
But this time, I wasn’t going to be merciful.
I had already laid down my pride over and over for Nathan over all these years. This time, I was done. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Seville. Nathan already has his girlfriend tending to him. He doesn’t need me. Besides, the doctor said a family member has to sign off on the surgery. I don’t think that should be me— we have nothing to do with each other.”
I took a deep breath, steeling myself. “In the future, it would be best if you contacted his girlfriend instead of me. Otherwise, they might misunderstand our relationship. I have something else to take care of now, Mrs. Seville. Goodbye.”
After making myself clear, I hung up.

I believed that Mary would understand what I meant.
Sure enough, after that day, no one contacted me about Nathan again.
