THE SYSTEM 1

Chapter 1

My boyfriend had some freak system that turned him into a damn chick magnet-and the only reason he got close to me… was to suck away my luck.

I paid his tuition.

Gave him over six grand every semester for “living expenses.”

I pulled every string to get him a job at a Fortune 500 company.

Worked my ass off until they made him general manager.

I gave him everything-connections, credibility, a future.

And when he didn’t need me anymore?

He kicked me to the curb like trash.

I had everything going for me.

Until he ruined me-left me for dead.

And of course, once he made it to the top,

He ran straight into the arms of his perfect little dream girl.

But guess what?

I opened my eyes… and I was back.

Right on the day I handed him his shot at that job.

came back to the day I brought my boyfriend into my family’s company.

Corbin-my so-called boyfriend-was standing right in front of me, dragging his high school sweetheart, Serena, along like some damn prize.

With a sneer on his face, he spat, “Elara Vaughn, aren’t you the big-time GM of this place?”

And this is what you’ve got for me? This low-level crap job?”

I mean, I graduated from Stanford.”

You’re not even giving me a VP title?”

You seriously expect me to start from the bottom?”

Corbin kept whining right in my ear, smug and full of himself, like he was too good to breathe the same air as the rest of us.

erena tugged on his sleeve and spoke in that fake sweet voice, all soft and sugary: “Elara made GM so young… who knows what kind of backdoor tricks she

>ulled?”

I guess she can’t afford to show us special treatment without people talking.”

My head was pounding from their voices. Looking at this pathetic couple, I tried hard to stay calm.

But Corbin wouldn’t shut up.

He saw I wasn’t answering and immediately snapped, “You’re my girlfriend, Elara.”

You’re literally the general manager, and this is how you treat me?”

“You’re so out of touch, it’s ridiculous.”

“No wonder there’s such a gap between us.”

Chapter 1

“Honestly, I must’ve been blind to fall for someone like you.”

“You’re old, plain, and clueless-who the hell would want you?”

I raised an eyebrow, keeping my tone cold.

“We’re a Fortune 500 company. Every employee here is Ivy League.”

“You start from the bottom like everyone else. What makes you think you’re so special?”

That shut him up for half a second-but just long enough for the rage to boil over.

He snapped, “You’re my girlfriend, Elara! You’re seriously not gonna help me out?”

“Or are you busy clearing the path for some other guy?”

Serena chimed in, eyes wide with mock innocence: “Elara, that’s really not fair.”

“You’re older than Corbin, you should be looking after him.”

“He’s still young, and you’re lucky to have him.”

‘Honestly, he’s kind of doing you a favor by being with someone your age.”
