THE SYSTEM 9

Chapter 9

I’d already dug the hole for both of them-hell, they jumped in themselves and even started burying each other.

Now I just had to decide when to blow the whole thing up.

Obviously, the best moment would be right after they reached the top…

So I could enjoy watching them fall hard. Delicious, really.

Corbin had been riding high lately.

When we met up for drinks, he looked smug as hell and said,

“Elara, with skills like mine, being a lowly finance manager feels like a damn insult.”

He actually had the audacity to say,

“You’re already the CEO. Why not make me your VP? Seems fair, right?”

I gave him a cold stare.

If he didn’t have that system boosting him, there’s no way he could’ve fooled me in our last life-guy’s dumb as rocks.

“Too much too fast and people start asking questions,” I said coolly.

“Just stay in Finance for a while.”

“Oh, and there’s a corporate gala tomorrow.”

“You and Serena should tag along. Good for your image.”

The word “gala” must’ve triggered some PTSD.

He flinched-probably remembering that $6,000 bottle of wine he blew last time.

“What’s the point of those stuck-up parties anyway?” he grumbled.

“I’m not going.”

I set down my coffee, faking a gentle tone.

“Networking. You want to be VP, don’t you?”

“That means shaking hands, kissing babies, you know-playing the game.”

“Tag along with me for a few events, meet the right people, and I’ll think about promoting you.”

That carrot on the stick got him drooling.

He grinned like an idiot.

“Fine, but when I get that VP title, I’m aiming higher.”

“I’m gonna be CEO, and you? You’re gonna quit and pop out some babies.”

“You don’t need to be running around the office in heels every day,” he added, totally serious.

“Just be a good little housewife.”

“Once I’m in charge, you’ll stay home and raise our kids.”

His words made me want to throw my boiling-hot coffee straight in his face.

I held back… for like five seconds.

Then my hand ‘slipped,’ and it spilled all over his expensive shirt.

“Elara! What the hell is wrong with you?” he shouted.

“If your hands are broken, go get them fixed!”

People in the café were already staring.

I mumbled something vaguely apologetic and walked out before I lost it completely.
