Chapter 5 – Property
MARCIA’S PERSPECTIVE

“Don’t touch her!” I yelled, stepping forward and whipping my hand across his face.
The sound of the slap echoed against the walls, silencing the entire pack house.
Kael stared at me, eyes black, shoulders heaving up and down.
I quickly bent down and helped Clara up, my jaw clenched with anger as I glared at my in–laws. “You’re all pieces of shit. You think attacking a defenceless woman is honourable?”
“Anyone who disrespects my mate will meet the same fate,” Kael snapped.
“If your mate had any respect in the first place, she wouldn’t sleep with a married and mated man.”
“You ungrateful little–”
“Enough,” the Alpha announced, cutting him off. “Kael, reject her.”
“Not yet,” I snapped. “When I asked you to reject me, you refused to do it. Now wait for the king’s word.”

Kael chuckled. “As if he will rule in your favour.”
“Wait and watch,” I seethed.
“Janet, go gather the pack,” Kael’s mother ordered. “Your brother will reject and divorce her this very instant.”

She ran off immediately, almost excited. I couldn’t believe I’d
considered her a sister.
“You okay?” I asked Clara, examining her cheek.
“Yes, my lady,” she sobbed, nodding. “Please forgive me. I am of
no use.”
“Shh.” I pulled her into a hug, rubbing her back. “Don’t worry. I don’t need you to fight for me. Go upstairs and pack all my gold and jewellery.”
She sniffed, nodding, and left immediately.
I glanced at Kael, who was holding Eunice by the shoulders, gently rubbing her arms. He was reassuring her, comforting her, as though it was her life hanging in the balance. As the pack members started to gather around us, their questioning gazes made me want to crawl under a table. It was embarrassing, how I’d spent so much time doing everything I possibly could for this household.
“Okay, that’s enough witnesses,” the Luna announced. “We are

gathered here today because the Alpha Heir has chosen himself a Luna Heiress. We all thought we already had one, but Marcia Xendale does not have a wolf. In these trying times, when our kingdom is almost always at war, we need a Luna Heiress who can protect us. Who can fight for us.”
I wanted to laugh. She was pretending as though my lack of a wolf was why Kael didn’t want me anymore. When in reality, that was exactly why he chose to marry me. They believed I’d be easy to control. That I’d accept everything they would throw at me, due to the lack of a werewolf temper.
“Meet General Eunice Hale, your new Luna Heiress!”
The room filled with whispers and gasps, exchanged glances and looks of pity directed towards me.
What about her?” Valerie, the younger daughter of Silverlake’s Beta, gestured towards me.
“Kael has decided to reject, and since she is wolf–less, divorce
Marcia Xendale.”
Shocked gasps echoed off the walls, some she–wolves covering their mouths and stepping back. Just the idea of it shook the floor beneath their feet. Some even left the room as though hearing Kael say the words would sever their own mate bonds.
“But before he does that, Marcia, I would like you to hand over your possessions. As tradition goes, a divorce initiated by the

male means the belongings you brought stay with him. We wish things could be different, but you left us no choice.”
I scoffed. “He initiated the divorce? It was me. I proposed it.”
“No, Marcia. You proposed a rejection, not a divorce,” the Alpha retorted.
“It is the same thing,” I gritted out.
“No, it isn’t. Rejection is for werewolves, while divorce for people like yourself,” he spat.
“Oh,” I nodded, smiling. “Now I understand why you chose me. You thought you could get away with this. That you could empty my coffers the way you did yours, and no one would fight back. I have already given everything I had to this pack. What more do you want?”
“I will not take all her property,” Kael said, sighing.
I frowned, surprised.
“Just half of everything she has will do. I am not cruel.”
I raised a brow, staring at him incredulously.
“Clara!” I shouted.
“Yes, my lady?” She came running at once.

“Bring my property list from my cupboard.”

Her eyes widened, and she hesitated, before leaving to follow my command. She may have been hired by them, but for an entire year, I’d paid her salaries myself. And with love and consideration, I’d bought her loyalty too.
She appeared a moment later, a folded piece of paper in her hands.
“Is this it, my lady?”
“Yes. Thank you, darling.” I took it from her and unfolded it, my eyes glazing over the piece of paper. A smile stretched across my lips. “I’m afraid I was wrong,” I announced. “You didn’t spend everything I had. There’s a lot left, actually, thanks to Prince Dravic Dawnvele’s generosity.”
“Show it to me,” Kael said immediately, extending his hand.
“Why? You said you only wanted half. Half’s been spent.”
Kael’s nostrils flared. “I want half of what’s left. Give it to me.” He stepped forward to snatch it from my hands, but I dropped the list on the floor, near my feet.
He stopped, glancing from me to the list, and then at everyone around us. All the witnesses of his greed. Everyone who would watch their Alpha Heir bow down before me to grab a piece of

paper.
“I dare you to try and take it, Kael Lightwood,” I said, my voice loud and challenging.
