Chapter 5

Shania stumbled backwards, the whole world spinning around her.

Her lower back hit the hard tombstone, her knees banged heavily on the stone steps, sharp pain exploded from her limbs.

But all of that is nothing compared to the pain in her heart, the kind of agony that feels like being torn in half and almost

suffocates her.

Jackson didn’t even look at her, just lowered his head and wiped the rain off Katherine’s face with his fingertips, “Feeling

better now?”

He didn’t relax until he heard the girl’s tearful “Hmm”, then he breathed a sigh of relief, took off his suit jacket and wrapped

it around Katherine, lifting her up in his arms.

As he turned around, his leather shoes crushed the scattered ashes on the ground, leaving behind a trail of striking

footprints.

Shania sat in the rain, feeling like her whole body was aching and shaking.

She reached out tremblingly, trying to scoop up the grayish-white powder, but the rain washed it away too quickly, just like

her and Jackson’s feelings over the years, couldn’t hold on no matter how hard she tried.

“Mom, I was wrong…” her voice choked up, “I married the wrong person, I shouldn’t have married him…”

After carefully collecting the remaining ashes, she took out the ninety-seventh love letter from her bag and tremblingly lit

As the flames consumed the pages, she remembered Jackson’s promise to his seriously ill mother that year: “Don’t worry,

I will protect Nia with my life and never let anyone bully her.”

Jackson, you used to help other women fight me, that was your way of protecting me.

I regretted it.

I regret falling in love with you.

Shania had a high fever all night.

She dreamed that she was sinking in the cold sea water, her mother’s ashes scattered around her like snowflakes, she

tried to grab those grayish white powder, but couldn’t hold on to them.

“Nia……Nia……”

Someone was calling her.

Shania struggled to open her eyes, but found herself not in bed, but in a speeding car.

The scenery outside the car window was quickly passing by, Jackson gripped the steering wheel tightly, his face looking really grim.

“Jackson…” she croaked, “Where are you taking me?”

Jackson didn’t look at her, he just said coldly, “Katherine has been kidnapped.”

Shania was taken aback, her confused mind slowly clearing up: “So what?”

“The other person called for you.” Jackson finally turned his head to look at her, “It’s Desmond.”

Desmond Walton.

This name stabbed into Shania’s heart like a knife.

The crazy guy who used to pester her and was finally kicked out of town by Jackson.

“You…you want me to trade myself for Katherine?” Shania’s voice trembled.

Jackson tightened his grip on the steering wheel and said, “Desmond used to like you, he wouldn’t do anything to hurt

you.”

Shania was shocked.

She struggled to open the car door, but found her hands were tied under the seatbelt.

“Jackson!” she screamed, “Are you crazy? Don’t you know who Desmond is?”

“Nia, calm down,” Jackson said calmly, “I’ll take Katherine back and come to rescue you right away.”

The car parked in front of an abandoned warehouse.

“I brought the person.” Jackson pushed Shania forward. “Where’s Katherine?”

Desmond snapped his fingers, and two henchmen escorted Katherine out.

Her hair was messy, tears streaked down her face, and her eyes lit up when she saw Jackson: “Mr. Pruitt!”

Jackson immediately let go of Shania, quickly stepped forward and hugged Katherine into his arms, saying, “It’s okay,

don’t be afraid, I’m here.”

Shania stood there, feeling cold all over.

She watched Jackson check if Katherine was hurt, watched him gently wipe away her tears, watched him not even give

her a glance.

“Jackson!!!”

She couldn’t help but scream out loud anymore.

Jackson turned back and said, “Don’t worry, I’ll come pick you up soon.”

After saying that, he hugged Katherine and turned around to leave, his back showing determination.

Shania tried to catch up, but Desmond grabbed her wrist and said, “Long time no see, Ms. Mosley.”

His breath sprayed on her ear, making her shiver.

Desmond shoved her into the car and drove straight to the hotel.

The moment the door closed, he pushed her onto the bed.
