Chapter 8
When I open my eyes, I’m in a hospital.
My head’s woozy and achy, but otherwise, I feel okay. [],
A nurse pulls out my IV and says, “Your husband stayed all night. He just left to grab breakfast–should be back soon.“[]
I nod, staring at the bright sunlight outside, dazed.
The nurse opens the door to leave, then beams at the tall, handsome guy in the doorway. []
“Look who’s back with breakfast!“]
“Husband“-the word stabs me. I look up and freeze.
It’s Shane.
He shuts the door and walks over, alone.
The elegant man stops by my bed, and as he studies me, I take him in–even in plain black clothes, his power oozes.
You can tell he’s somebody, just from his vibe. []
And that height, those looks… my heart skips a beat.
Remembering the nurse’s googly eyes, I eye his broad shoulders and smirk sweetly: “Baby, don’t worry. I’m good.”
Shane freezes, mid–set – down. He turns, frowning: “What’d you call me?“[]
I hat my lashes, testing: “Uh…baby?“]]
His brows knit tighter.
He stares a second, then hits the call button. []
Doctor and nurses rush in for tests.
While Shane talks to the doc outside, I wolf down breakfast.[]
When he returns, I hold out my bowl: “Baby, my hand hurts.“[]
looks from my flirty eyes to the bandage on my head.[]
se my memory, I wouldn’t gaze at him like this–all trusting and needy.[]
says nothing, and takes the bowl. After I finish, he tosses the trash.
omes back, I leap out of bed and hug him: “Babe, did I scare you yesterday?“]
He goes rigid, but then his arms circle me. “Mhm,” he rumbles.[]
“Sorry for worrying you. I’ll be careful.” [
I stand on tiptoe and kiss his cheek.]
He pushes me back–too quickly. I think I crossed a line, but then I spot the red flush on his ears. Total giveaway.
Shane avoids my eyes, fishing for cigs. He pulls out a pack and lighter, then remembers he can’t smoke here.[]
