Chapter 7
I thought Mom and Dad had predicted this. Simon would give in to Laila’s confession for him and break our mate bond.
After all, he’d broken our mind–link when he started getting closer to Laila a year ago. I supposed that he must’ve wanted to
break our bond.
Little did I expect him to turn down Laila’s confession.
“Stop bringing this up! My mate will only be Zora. I’ll go check on her and see if she’s awake.”
He entered my ward, but I was nowhere to be seen. He immediately stopped Healer Petra and asked, “Where’s Zora? She’s just donated a kidney. Why isn’t she in her ward?”
Stunned, Healer Petra replied, “Was it the one who donated her kidney earlier? She died during surgery.”
Simon froze. He couldn’t believe his ears. “What did you say?”
Healer Petra repeated herself. After pondering for a while, she added, “Originally, I wanted to inform you guys after the surgery,
but you didn’t seem to care about her at all. You all left with another patient.”
Simon staggered backward, struggling to regain his balance.
“No way! This can’t be real,” he sputtered.
He turned and headed for the operating room, but there was no one inside. He searched high and low, then finally found me in the
morgue.
His hands trembled. It took him several tries to lift the white cloth off my body.
Staring at my pale, lifeless corpse, he seemed as if he’d been struck by lightning. His knees gave in, and then he collapsed to the
floor.
He tried to haul himself back up on his feet, but he couldn’t.
“Zora, you must be joking, right?” he cried, bursting into tears. “Get up now! This isn’t funny at all. It’s just a minor surgery.
How could you possibly die?”
I hovered above him, trying to touch his head. Yet, my hand went right through his body.
So it turned out that I still had some effect on Simon. But I was already dead–I couldn’t comfort him even if I wanted to.
He clambered to his feet and clung to my body, unwilling to let go. It wasn’t until his Beta dragged Healer Petra to him that he
wiped his tears and recomposed himself.
Grabbing her by the collar, he snarled, “Aren’t you the top healer in the Lunaris pack? Why did Zora die? It’s all your fault. I’ll make you pay for this!”

Healer Petra was terrified. Tears streamed down her face as she quickly explained, “This isn’t my fault! You didn’t tell me Ms.
Zora Thorne was poisoned by wolfsbane. It had been so deep in her system that even if she hadn’t gone through this surgery, she
would’ve died!”
Simon’s eyes widened.
“She’s actually poisoned?” he quavered. “So she wasn’t lying!”
I once told him I had been poisoned by Laila. But Laila put on a pitiful act and claimed that I was the liar. Even my parents bought
her lie.
And Simon did, as well. He figured that since my family claimed that I was a liar, something must be wrong with my personality.
So he grew distant from me. Instead, he got closer to Laila.
Yet, Healer Petra now revealed to him that I had actually been poisoned. I had been so sick that I couldn’t live long.
While Simon was still reeling from shock, she threw in another bombshell. “Besides, she only had one kidney. Of course, she’d die
if you told us to transplant it into someone else!”
“What did you
say?”
