Almost a Wife 79

Chapter 8

Afraid of worrying my parents, I expressionlessly went back to my bedroom to answer the phone.

“Celia, what were you doing running in the bridal shop? Who made you wear the wedding dress? Who were

you with? Were you alone?”

“Don’t you understand when I told you to come home? I have been waiting for you at home for a long time.

Don’t test my patience!”

I took a deep breath and controlled my emotions.

“Lucas, did you think you were the king? I am an adult, and I decide for myself what I do. I said we should break up, and it seems like you don’t understand human language, right?”

“What do you try on a wedding dress or anything that has to do with you? If you continue to harass me, don’t

blame me for calling the police!”

“Moreover, that was never my home! It was your home!”

Without waiting for his response, I hung up the phone directly.

I blocked the new number he found.

Lying in the bedroom carefully prepared by my parents, I tossed and turned but couldn’t fall asleep.

At four o’clock in the morning, my aunt sent me a message.

“How did Lucas find my house? What did you say to him? Today he didn’t seem right, kept asking me where

you went, kneeling at my doorstep and refusing to get up.”

I rubbed my tired eyes and replied to her, “I have already explained it clearly. Maybe he was being irrational

and couldn’t accept the sudden disappearance of someone who was chasing after him. I guess his

self-esteem couldn’t handle it. You didn’t tell him where I was, did you?”

“Is your aunt that dumb? Of course not, I was already on my way to the airport. Looking forward to Celia’s

wedding! But do we have to get up so early for the wedding? Why are you awake already?”

I didn’t reply anymore and turned off my phone.

Tears, however, couldn’t help but overflow from the eyes, blurring the vision.

When there was only one hour left before getting up, I finally fell asleep in a drowsy state.

I couldn’t sleep well in my dream, and Lucas’s voice kept ringing in my ears.

“You couldn’t go, you couldn’t leave me, I wouldn’t allow it!”

“Who made you get married? You can only be with me! I was wrong before, please give me a chance, okay?

Celia, please forgive me.”

Tears soaked my cheeks as I cried, my whole-body convulsing.

I finally snapped out of the nightmare when my mother woke me up.

“What’s wrong, Celia? What did you dream about? You’re crying so much, is it because you don’t want to get

married?”

“Our baby didn’t want to get married, so we didn’t. Mom went to talk to them, telling them not to force

themselves.”

I hurriedly grabbed my mother’s hand.

“No, I woke up, I just had a nightmare, I’m fine.”

I got up and quickly freshened up. As I was getting ready to fix my hair and put on makeup, my phone started

ringing.

It was Miah who called.

I guess it was to show off, she became the winner, and I became a deserter.

I didn’t answer and coldly hung up.

She, however, sent several more messages in a row.

“Sister Celia, I’m sorry, it’s all my fault. Please forgive me. It’s all my fault. Can you please speak to Mr. Harper

and ask him not to fire me?”

“I have elderly parents to support, I really can’t afford to lose this job! I can’t even afford the rent in this neighborhood on my own, I have already emptied all my savings, I really can’t hold on anymore!”

“I admit that I had some different thoughts about Mr. Harper before, but nothing ever happened between us, I swear on my life! Mr. Harper has stopped answering my calls and deleted my contact information, I don’t know what else to do but to ask for your help. The company employees say that Mr. Harper likes you the

most, he listens to everything you say…”
