Chapter 9: Adapting

Selene’s POV

It was just fastening the seatbelt. What was I thinking just now? Why did I close my eyes?

Feeling the Alpha’s proximity, I instinctively tightened my toes, and the fingers gripping the documents turned pale from how hard I was squeezing, as if I might transform any second and extend my claws.

Suddenly, I felt a pair of warm hands run through my hair, and a shadow fell over

“As you expected,” he whispered softly in my ear.

When his lips, carrying the cold scent of pinewood, came down, I couldn’t help but shiver. My hands automatically clung to his shoulders, pulling him closer and wrapping my arms tightly around his neck. His large frame pressed down on me, and I could only part my lips and let him take what he wanted, occasionally gasping for air. The small space in the car grew even hotter. Alexander grabbed my shoulder with one hand and held my neck with the other, preventing me from pulling back. I was nearly suffocating. Then, he gave me a brief moment to breathe, and his chaotic kisses started falling on my face, his soft lips trailing

down to my neck. I reacted quickly, pushing against his chest, but soon my mouth was sealed again, and I could only make muffled sounds.

I pulled his shirt apart with too much force, the buttons flying off and bouncing around the car with a sharp sound. Struggling to catch my breath, desire overwhelmed my rationality, and my mind became a haze. It was so beautiful—

his kisses were wild and passionate.

The scorching heat of his breath swept across my neck, and his kiss landed on my chest. His firm muscles were within reach, and I stared at the car ceiling, my vision blurring. The air was thick with his scent.

He cupped the back of my head with one hand, while the other slid along my waist, sending sparks of pleasure through my body. His large palm gently cupped my soft breast, and he pinched the top, lightly massaging it. My entire body felt electrified, my legs weak. I wanted to resist, to move away, but he gripped my waist, pressing me back into the passenger seat, trapping me.

Like a fish gasping for water before death, I couldn’t help but lean into him, my hands weakening, unable to push him away. My mind screamed to pull away, but my body kept drawing closer to him.

He kissed me for a long time before finally pulling away. Both of us were breathing

heavily, our eyes clouded with desire, and I could even see the darkness in his eyes deepened by his lust.

He stroked my neck soothingly, as if the intense kiss we just shared had been someone else. I clung to his shirt, realizing something, and quickly let go. I straightened his collar, explaining, “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to.”

Many people have praised my calmness and composure.

But why, in front of this man, do I become like a wild animal?

“It’s okay, take your time. I’ll help you adapt,” he said with a smile, even teasing

me a little. He then neiped straighten my clothes and started the car again.

Adapt to what? Fastening the seatbelt? Or something else…

At that moment, I felt like a beginner. I had been in relationships before. But compared to the cold and arrogant Jaxon Lancaster, Alexander Lancaster’s powerful yet gentle and witty presence was clearly much harder to resist.

I had clearly suggested we become mates, with me taking the lead. But now, my emotions were completely under Alexander Lancaster’s control.

No, if I keep being passive like this, I’ll

definitely lose out. I need to take back

control…

Just then, my phone suddenly rang from inside my bag.

The ringtone was particularly loud in the quiet car. I quickly took out my phone and, seeing that it was Lily calling, I answered.

Lily Cruz is my best friend. We grew up together, and six months ago, she was sent to the Wind Stock Pack for an exchange program. She’s a tribal doctor.

On her way back today, she couldn’t get into her own territory because she didn’t have the proper pass, which is why she

couldn’t attend my marking ceremony.

“Selene, I just arrived at the packhouse and heard from the other werewolves that the marking ceremony was canceled. What happened?” Lily Cruz was impulsive and had a bright, clear voice. She asked as soon as I picked up the phone.

“The marking ceremony was canceled?” I was confused.

I had already had the marking ceremony with Alexander Lancaster and we had paired up. How could there be news of a canceled ceremony?

“Jaxon Lancaster said so. I couldn’t argue with him; after all, he’s the Alpha,” Lily

said angrily, and I could almost imagine her shrugging helplessly.

“To cancel the ceremony after all this preparation? What’s wrong with him?”

“Have you called him? What did he say?”

“He said it was because you two had a conflict, and you weren’t happy, so the party was canceled temporarily. They’ll reschedule it when you’re no longer upset.”

“That’s total nonsense. I can’t believe it.”

“Is he crazy?” I was shocked.

Alpha Jaxon Lancaster shifted all the

blame onto me and hid the fact that I had already paired with Alexander.

Did he really think I’d just get over it, go back, and do the ceremony after I cooled down?

I smiled bitterly and asked Lily, “Why don’t you believe him?”

“It’s not that I don’t trust him, it’s that I know you better than anyone. No one knows how much you’ve sacrificed for this ceremony,” Lily said.

“The dream banquet you’ve been waiting for so long was right in front of you. How could you cancel the marking ceremony just because of an argument with him? He

must have done something to cross your bottom line!”

Hearing how much I once looked forward to the marking ceremony from Lily’s words, and thinking about the outcome now, I felt a deep sense of desolation.

I couldn’t help but let out a faint sigh. Before I could say anything, the sound of urgent braking pierced the air.

My body instinctively lurched forward, and if I hadn’t been wearing my seatbelt, I might have hit the windshield.

Just as I was about to ask why the sudden stop, the man’s deep, apologetic voice came from the front.

“Sorry.”

I turned my head, and saw the man’s serious profile as he drove, his face tense, looking as if he was unhappy.

Is he angry?
