Chapter 4
Before Lila could answer, Lily plopped down next to me with a laugh, deliberately shoving Lila to the side.
“Isn’t it obvious? You had too much to drink, and Lila just happened to run into you.”
I chuckled and thanked her while glancing around at the messy living room, then pressed my hand to my temple, looking pained.
“This place feels familiar, but I don’t remember it being this chaotic.”
“She seems to have been… stimulated somehow,” Lila said, playing along with my act.
Lily cut her off in a panic.
‘My sister’s always been a lightweight! She must’ve blacked out from drinking too much. Please, don’t read too much into it.”
Seeing the lingering doubt in Lila’s expression, Lily quickly tried to usher her out.
‘It’s getting late. You should head home and get some rest.”
Before Lila could respond, Brian and Lily were already shoving her toward the door.
[ust as they were about to open it, Lila suddenly stopped, putting on a cautious expression. She grabbed Brian and Lily by the arms.
‘Oh, by the way, have you cashed in that ten–million–dollar lottery ticket yet?”
‘What?!”
Brian and Lily shouted in unison, their voices echoing through the apartment.
Lila quickly raised a finger to her lips.
‘Shhh! Don’t be so loud–wealth attracts trouble, you know!”
Brian grabbed Lila’s hand anxiously.
“What are you talking about?” he demanded.
As soon as Lila Preston heard Brian Parker’s question, she turned to Lily Eleanor with a teasing smile.
“Didn’t you say you were planning to give that big gift to Brian for your anniversary? Don’t tell me you’ve already forgotten? You even asked me to help prepare the gift box before your trip.”
Lily froze for a moment but quickly masked her unease with a nonchalant shrug.
“It’s all ready. You’ve just ruined the surprise. It’s in the drawer,” she said, feigning indifference.,
Leaning against the sofa, I watched their pathetic attempt at acting and almost burst out laughing.
Once Lila left, Brian and Lily frantically turned the house upside down, searching every corner.
Hiding under the covers, I sent Lila a quick text:
The show has begun!
The Next Morning, looking at the house that had been a chaotic mess last night but was now spotlessly clean, I let out a cold laugh.
To restore the house to its original state and prevent me from regaining my memory, they must have spent the entire night cleaning without sleep.
Sure enough, in the kitchen, Lily was preparing breakfast with massive dark circles under her eyes.
Suppressing my disgust, I leaned on her shoulder and smiled sweetly.
‘Are you off work today, sister? No need to go in?”
Lily gave me a side glance and barely managed to force a smile.
‘With your health not fully recovered, I thought I’d stay home to keep you company.”
After a brief hesitation, she tilted her head slightly, looking at me casually.
‘By the way, sister, I have a gift for your brother–in–law. It’s about the size of a movie ticket. Where do you think I could hide it so it stays safe?”
I raised an eyebrow and smiled knowingly.
Ah, so she’s fishing for where I hid the lottery ticket.
Feigning thoughtfulness, I shrugged nonchalantly.
“I can think of a few good hiding spots, but I’m not that familiar with your house, so I’m not sure if they’d work.”
Lily’s eyes lit up as if she had just discovered a treasure, looking at me expectantly.
“Just tell me, and I’ll check them myself.”
With a glint of mischief, I smiled coldly and gave her a list of the dirtiest, most insect–infested spots in the house.
Watching her rush off eagerly, I couldn’t hold back my laughter.
A minute later, an ear–piercing scream echoed from the room.
“Ahhh! Cockroaches! So many cockroaches!”
This was followed by the sound of retching, and shortly after, came more gagging noises from the bathroom.
Tiptoeing to the door, I peered inside with an innocent look.
“Sister, what’s wrong?” I asked.
Furious, Lily yelled back,
“Why are all your hiding spots filled with bugs?!”
“How was I supposed to know your house was this filthy? It’s not like I live here all the time,” I retorted.
Lily was left speechless, unable to lash out or explain, and could only swallow her frustration.
Suddenly, the doorbell rang. Lily hesitantly opened the door, stunned to see Brian standing there.
“What are you doing back? Aren’t you supposed to be at work?” she asked, her voice tinged with disbelief.
With matching dark circles under his eyes, Brian dusted off his clothes and explained,
“I handled the important tasks early and came back.”
Clearly, Brian had returned to continue searching for the lottery ticket.
