Chapter 9
Winter never expected to survive.
She forced open her heavy eyelids to see a nurse changing IV bottles, momentarily thinking it had all
been a dream.
“You’re awake? Thank goodness! We worked around the clock to save you. You’re lucky to be alive. Just lie still–you need plenty of rest in the coming days.”
Hearing these reassuring words, Winter finally came to her senses, realizing she had escaped death
once again.
For a moment, she felt both relieved and saddened, wanting to laugh and cry at the same time. Her
emotions were a jumble, taking half a day to settle.
After regaining her composure, she hired a caretaker to accompany her for check–ups and
medication changes, ensuring someone looked after her meals and daily needs.
With no one to disturb her, her body gradually recovered, and her mood shifted from gloomy to
bright.
Occasionally doctors would come for rounds and, after checking her condition, casually inquire:
“With injuries this severe, your husband hasn’t come to take care of you all this time?”
“Was the person who brought you to the hospital really your husband?”
To their questions, Winter always gave the same reply:
“He’s not my husband. I’m single and unmarried.”
During this time, Aurelia continued to send messages showing off how Dominic served her water, accompanied her shopping, and bought her gifts.
Seeing these no longer stirred any emotions in Winter.
Days passed, and soon it was time for her discharge.
Just as she finished packing her things, she received a call from an unknown number.

‘Ms. Bailey, your visa has been approved. When would you like to come pick it up?”
Hearing this news, a smile of relief appeared on Winter’s face, and her voice became noticeably
lighter.
“I can come this afternoon. What’s the latest time the consulate closes?”
She listened attentively to the response, not noticing that her hospital room door had been pushed
open.
Dominic walked in with a frown, his cold tone mixed with a hint of confusion.
“What business do you have at the consulate?”
Seeing him, the smile vanished from Winter’s face as she hung up the phone.
“Nothing that concerns you.”
Hearing her icy tone, Dominic’s expression darkened.
“Doesn’t concern me? Don’t forget, you’re my wife now. I have every right to know what you’re up
to.”
“I’m not your wife. Your wife is Aurelia.”
Winter stared at him steadily, her tone as calm as still water.
Dominic had been somewhat suspicious, but hearing her words, his doubts instantly dissipated.
He figured she was just jealous again, playing some hard–to–get game, and went along with it.
“You’re right–we’re only married on paper. In my heart, Aurelia is my true wife! That’s why I’ve decided to give her a proper wedding. It’s happening tomorrow, and you’re to attend as a witness.”
Looking at the invitation he tossed over, Winter’s eyes flickered slightly as she smiled silently.
“Okay. I’ll have a special gift prepared for you tomorrow.”
Seeing her unexpectedly calm reaction, Dominic sensed something was off. Just as he was about to question her further, Aurelia called.
“Dominic, when are you picking me up? I’m dying to try on wedding dresses!”

Hearing her playful whining, Dominic immediately forgot everything else.
He soothed her while turning to leave. Before exiting, he remembered something and turned back to add:
“By the way, I’ve settled Aurelia in. You can move into my villa tonight–consider it compensation for donating blood to save Aurelia the other day.”
Winter watched him walk away step by step, murmuring softly:
“Compensation? The only compensation I want is to cut all ties with you and never cross paths again.”
After completing her discharge procedures, Winter went to the consulate to collect her visa.
Back home, she slept soundly until her alarm woke her at eight o’clock.
After getting up, she placed the previously prepared recording and two marriage certificates in a box and called for a same–day courier service.
“Please deliver these items to the address on this invitation at noon. They’re for a Mr. Thorne. Tell him this is Winter Bailey’s wedding gift, wishing him happiness and a lifetime of marital bliss.”
After finishing her arrangements, Winter checked the time and headed to the airport with her suitcase.
At 11:30, she boarded the plane, having blocked and deleted all contact methods with Dominic.
Outside the window, snow began to fall as the city she had lived in for over twenty years slowly shrank to a mere dot.
She closed her eyes, allowing herself to drift into sleep, her heart calm and fearless.
She knew the nightmare that had spanned two lifetimes was finally over.
From now on, her life would be filled only with sweet dreams.
