Chapter 17
When Liliana saw Jessie actually walk away, a massive emptiness settled inside her.
Anna supported her from behind. “Mom, don’t worry. Since Jessie doesn’t want you and Dad anymore, I’ll stay by your side for the rest of my life.”
Her words were like a sharp knife stabbing into Liliana’s heart once more.
For the first time, Liliana began to waver. She questioned herself if it was really worth falling out with Jessie all because of Anna.
Brandon suffered a severe leg injury. The Hickman family sent someone to rush him to the hospital. He remained unconscious in the hospital, so they sent Anna to take care of him.
Although she was there physically, her mind was nowhere near Brandon. She only tried to seduce Brandon before because she thought he was an excellent catch. Yet now, he had become disabled. Who’d want to spend the rest of their life with a cripple?
All she could think about was the handsome and wealthy Zane. She suddenly realized she could no longer waste another moment on Brandon. She had to pursue Zane instead.
She had just stood up to leave when Brandon woke up.
“Anna, have you been taking care of me all this time?” Brandon’s face was deathly pale, and his whole body was weak.
She froze mid–step and quickly put her act back on. “Yes, Brandon. It’s been me looking after you. How are you feeling now?”
Even if she planned to seduce Zane, she couldn’t afford to offend Brandon just yet. After all, no matter how useless Brandon might seem now, he still had the Kerr family behind him. He could at least serve as a backup option.
Brandon propped himself up on his arms. The moment he moved, the pain shot through his wound, leaving him drenched in a cold sweat.
Anna hurried over to support him, her face full of concern. “Brandon, the doctor said the bullet hit your major artery and damaged your bone pretty badly. You might have trouble walking in the future.”
Brandon’s face instantly turned ghostly pale. “Are you saying I’m going to be crippled?”
Anna added fuel to the fire. “From what the doctors said, it looks like that’s the case. But don’t
worry,
Brandon. I won’t look down on you. You’ve always been like a brother to me, and I’ll

take care of you. It’s all Jessie’s and Mr. Stafford’s fault. They were way too ruthless!”

The mention of Jessie finally stirred some emotion in Brandon, flushing his previously pale face. In a hoarse voice, he said, “This has nothing to do with Jessie. It’s Zane’s fault.”
Anna’s expression darkened instantly. Even now, he was still defending Jessie!
“Anna…”
Brandon hadn’t finished speaking when Monica stormed into the ward, her face twisted with
rage.
“Brandon, how’s your leg?”
Anna’s eyes flickered with calculation. If Brandon was too soft, then she’d try to manipulate
Monica.
“Mrs. Kerr, Brandon’s leg probably won’t recover completely. Jessie and Mr. Stafford went too far. Not even the best doctors can help him now.”
Brandon frowned slightly. He had just clarified that this incident had nothing to do with Jessie. Why was Anna still trying to blame her?
Anna expected Monica to erupt in hatred toward Jessie and Zane. But instead, Monica suddenly raised her hand and slapped Anna across the face.
“Anna Hickman, it’s you again! Back then, you were hell–bent on seducing my son. Then, you suddenly ran off and called off the wedding at the engagement party. After Jessie married into our family, she and Brandon were finally doing better.
‘‘But you, a shameless tramp, appeared again out of nowhere. And now, you’re trying to push the blame onto others. If it weren’t for you, how could Brandon and Jessie have ended up in
such a mess?”
Anna was stunned by the slap. She instinctively wanted to retaliate, but she suddenly remembered this was Brandon’s mother. The Kerr family was a prestigious family. She
couldn’t afford to offend them.
Brandon frowned. “Mom, this has nothing to do with Anna. You…”
“You shut your mouth as well! Are you blind and clueless? Can’t you see how good Jessie’s been to you all these years? How dare you cheat on her with another woman? You’ve got some nerve!
“Brandon Kerr, let me tell you something–either you go and beg Jessie to come back, or you get out of my sight with this woman. The Kerr family will never accept some woman with a shady background as our daughter–in–law!”
After venting her rage, Monica stormed out of the hospital ward without even checking on

Brandon’s condition.
