Chapter 17
The words “assisted suicide” exploded in Reed’s mind.
His vision went black, all strength instantly drained from his body as he slid down the wall to the floor.
In one week, she would leave this world forever.
He frantically grabbed the doctor, incoherently demanding:
“Impossible! Didn’t she still have over six months? Why so fast? Why can’t she stand, why can she barely speak clearly?”
The doctor, startled by his manic behavior, patiently explained:
“Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease is a fatal neurodegenerative disorder. Every patient eventually reaches this stage. Given her current condition, it won’t be long before she loses all function, becoming vegetative until death.”
“She should indeed have had a longer survival period, but her nervous system is already severely damaged-language ability deteriorating, limb function lost, vision rapidly declining. As for why the disease progressed so quickly…”
The doctor paused, looking at Reed’s ashen face:
“Such rapid deterioration is usually triggered by severe mental stress or psychological trauma. Has Miss Walsh experienced any intense shock?”
Intense shock?
Psychological trauma?
Reed released his grip, his body trembling uncontrollably.
He remembered the peanuts he’d forced her to eat, her questioning in the detention center, and the brutally cooked Sugar, the nightmare at the abandoned building, the desecration of her parents’ graves…
Each incident had been caused by him.
So the thing accelerating her death was him!
“It was me…” he mumbled, “I killed her…”
“Pardon?” The doctor hadn’t heard clearly.
“Nothing.”
Reed was about to leave when the doctor spoke again: “Given how her condition is progressing, she’ll soon enter a vegetative state until death. For her, perhaps assisted suicide is the best release.”
Reed, tears streaming down his face, rushed back to Avery’s room only to be firmly blocked by medical staff.
They called the police.
Reed was taken away by local police for harassing a patient.
Avery sat in her wheelchair, fearfully watching him, a nurse standing protectively beside her.
“I wasn’t harassing her-she’s my wife!” Reed struggled, “Avery, tell them I’m your husband!”
Avery shook her head, her eyes full of fear: “Don’t know… him…”
Reed suddenly stopped struggling, as if all strength had been drained from him, choking out:

“Avery, Avery, I’m so sorry, Avery…”
His assistant hurriedly arranged bail.
But Reed shook his head, choosing to spend the night in detention.
“Sir, have you lost your mind?” his assistant asked.
“Perhaps,” Reed gave a bitter smile. “I really have gone insane.”
The cell held several local thugs who immediately surrounded the man in his expensive suit.
“Hey, you look loaded,” the ringleader sneered.

The big man was stunned momentarily, then enraged, calling his companions to beat Reed.
Fists rained down on Reed like hailstones.
But he didn’t fight back or dodge.
He closed his eyes, accepting each blow as if this could somehow share in his suffering.
“Had enough? Keep going!” Reed opened his eyes, blood-red and crazed. “Hit harder! What are you, little girls who skipped breakfast?!”
The thugs, frightened by his demeanor, exchanged glances before slowly backing away.
This man had completely lost his mind.
At daybreak, the assistant was shocked speechless seeing Reed covered in injuries.

“Prepare to buy that nursing home,” Reed wiped blood from the corner of his mouth. “Whatever it takes, I can’t let Avery leave me.”

Since Avery didn’t remember him, he would make her know him anew.
He would help Avery remember all their beautiful past.
Avery, this time, I will never leave your side again.
