Chapter 4

Reed forcefully pushed Avery off Victoria.

Avery’s head slammed violently against the overturned table corner, momentarily blacking out her vision.

Warm liquid trickled down her face. She touched it-her fingers came away bright red.

Reed scooped Victoria into his arms, shouting at Avery, “Have you completely LOST YOUR MIND?”

When his gaze caught the blood streaming down her face, though, he froze, genuine pain and concern flashing across his

features.

“Reed, my arm hurts so much…” Victoria cried, raising her scalded arm.

Reed’s expression instantly hardened again.

Avery wiped the blood from her face and pointed at the meat on the floor, screaming through her tears:

“She killed Sugar! She cooked our Sugar! That dog was with us for FIVE YEARS!”

Reed stared blankly at the scattered meat on the floor, his expression momentarily grief-stricken.

Victoria immediately snuggled deeper into his arms, sobbing.

“That dog bit me first, and you promised I could deal with it! I just sent it to an animal shelter. What dog stew? I have no idea what she’s talking about! I was just having a nice meal when she burst in and attacked me!”

Reed looked at Avery, his eyes growing cold again.

“I don’t remember us ever having a dog. Victoria is so delicate, unlike you-she wouldn’t do something like this. Besides, a dog that bites deserves to die. Even if it was made into stew, does that give you the right to assault someone? To scald someone

with boiling broth?”

Avery suddenly remembered that rainy night five years ago when they found a trembling puppy next to a garbage can, pitifully licking her fingers.

They brought it home together.

Reed bathed it and held it, smiling as he said:

“Let’s call him Sugar. He’ll never suffer again, and from now on, Sugar and I will protect you together.”

Thinking of this, Avery’s tears flowed like broken pearls.

How ironic, how tragic.

Sugar remained loyal to her until death.

While this man who once professed undying love now pretended to have amnesia, hurting her repeatedly for another woman.

Chapter 4

Seeing Avery’s state, Reed felt his heart being violently wrenched.

He told himself to hold on for just three more days.

Three days later, after the wedding, he could “regain his memory.”

“Reed, it hurts so bad…” Victoria whimpered again.

Reed’s thoughts were instantly pulled back. He gazed at Victoria’s reddened arm with complete concern, utterly missing the fact that Avery’s leg had been burned raw.

“I’ll take you to the hospital right away.”

He didn’t spare Avery another glance as he carried Victoria out.

Soon, the door opened again. A bag was thrown at Avery’s feet.

A familiar tuft of white fur peeked out from the opening.

The bag contained… Sugar’s fur?!

She clutched the bag and let out a heart-wrenching wail.

“I’m so sorry, Sugar, I came back too late, I’m so sorry…”

Avery didn’t know how she made it back home.

There was no Sugar to greet her anymore, to circle around her, to nuzzle against her affectionately.

She held Sugar’s fur all night, sitting motionless.

The next day, she gave her forehead and leg burns basic treatment, then took Sugar to a pet crematorium. She placed his ashes in a small porcelain bottle.

“Sugar, be good, wait for me just two more days. I’ll be with you soon.”

Avery bought a bouquet of chrysanthemums and went to the cemetery.

She caressed the tombstone, leaning against it. “Dad, Mom, our family-and Sugar too-we’ll all be together in another place soon.”

Leaving the cemetery, Avery had just arrived home when Reed stormed in, looking furious.

“Avery Walsh, where have you taken Victoria?”
