Chapter 3
When Hazel next opened her eyes, it was two days later.
A nurse changing her bandages stopped her from sitting up.
“Don’t move. Your fractured ribs nearly punctured your organs and caused massive bleeding. You need to rest in the hospital for a
few days.”
With that, she called Roman, who had been waiting outside the door.
His eyes were bloodshot, his face filled with remorse.
“Hazel, does it hurt? I’m so sorry-it’s all my fault. You got hurt because of me. You have no idea how terrified I was when the doctors said your condition was critical. Thank God you’re okay. I couldn’t live without you…”
Hazel interrupted him, her voice hoarse.
“How’s Naomi?”
Roman’s expression froze momentarily.
“She’s fine. The stalking was fake. I was just worried because she’s a young woman alone, and if something really had happened… Hazel, I promise I won’t deal with her anymore!”
Hazel looked at the bite mark on his neck and felt as if her heart was being sliced into pieces, every breath bringing pain.
She forcibly pulled her hand away from his. “I’m tired.”
After that day, Roman stayed by her side constantly, not even daring to sleep at night for fear she might accidentally injure herself.
In just a few days, he had lost significant weight and looked more haggard than the patient herself. Yet Hazel felt nothing.
One day during her afternoon nap, she was awakened by screaming outside her room.
Naomi stood in the center of a crowd, a bleeding cut across her right wrist, a knife clutched in her left hand.
Her voice was shrill: “Roman Winters, you finally came to see me. For three whole days, no matter how many calls or messages, you ignored me. What did I do wrong? Why are you treating me like this?!”
Blood steadily dripped, forming a small puddle at her feet.
Roman’s face was ashen with anger. “I’ve made myself perfectly clear. I will never love you. Stop harassing me!”
As he turned to leave, Naomi shrieked.
“Roman Winters! Don’t you dare walk away! Or I’ll die right here in front of you!”
Before anyone could react, she slashed her wrist several more times. Blood sprayed out, instantly soaking half her body.
Roman lunged forward in horror, frantically covering her wounds.
“Naomi Jensen! Are you trying to kill yourself?!”
Her face was ghostly white, but she seemed immune to the pain, her eyes locked on him with an unsettling intensity.
“If being with you means sacrificing my life, then it’s worth it.”

Roman gazed at her, his expression complex.
“You’ve truly lost your mind…” he murmured hoarsely.
Then he swept her limp body into his arms and rushed toward the operating room.
Hazel watched his retreating figure in silence.
That night, Roman didn’t return. He only arranged for a caregiver.
In the hallway, nurses finishing their rounds gossiped in hushed tones.
“Did you hear? That Jensen woman nearly died from blood loss today. Mr. Winters had to pay a fortune for emergency blood
transfusions to save her!”
“Didn’t he supposedly hate her? Why go to such lengths to save her?”
“Hate? In my opinion, he’s just putting on a show for his wife. Who turns down a woman throwing herself at him?”
Hazel gave a bitter smile.
Indeed… who would refuse a woman throwing herself at him? She had been foolish enough to believe Roman wouldn’t be swayed by Naomi…
At least now she’d woken up.
On discharge day, Hazel handled the paperwork herself. As she was about to hail a taxi outside the hospital, Roman approached.
“Why didn’t you wait for me before leaving?” he asked and automatically removed his jacket to place it around her shoulders, but she stepped away before he could.
His hands froze in midair, a flash of panic crossing his eyes.
“Hazel, are you angry with me? I’m sorry. The company’s been so busy lately that I couldn’t make time, but I asked the caregiver about your condition every day. Please forgive me just this once?”
By the end, his eyes had reddened, his voice trembling slightly.
Seeing passersby beginning to stare, Hazel didn’t want to create a scene. She gave a noncommittal response and got into the car.
