Chapter 5
Chapter 5
Watching me get farther and farther away in the rearview mirror, Daxon felt like something was seriously off.
He opened our chat, wanting to say something, but realized our last conversation had been weeks ago.
He locked his phone screen, but that uneasy feeling got even stronger.
He asked Aria, “At dinner, did Skylar say she was applying to NYU? Did she mention what major she wanted?”
“Huh? I don’t think she said anything.”
He irritably checked my Instagram, scrolling until he found that ticket giveaway post. He quickly shot me a message.

[You bought me Daido Moriyama tickets? Don’t give them away! Let’s go together!]
[How’d you even get these? I set alarms and still couldn’t snag any.]
But I wasn’t replying instantly like I used to.
Back home, Daxon collapsed on the couch, constantly picking up his phone, glancing at it, then tossing it aside.
Aria sprawled on the other side of the couch, looking all miserable.
“Daxon, can you get me some hot water?”
Daxon plugged in his phone and answered absentmindedly, “Get it yourself.”
“But my belly really hurts.”
“Cut it out. Just because other people can’t tell doesn’t mean I can’t.”
Aria was stunned. “Did I do something wrong?”
Yet Daxon didn’t even look up from his phone, shaking his head dismissively.
“Daxon, can’t you just care about me a little?”
He looked up at Aria coldly. “I didn’t call you out, I came back with you-that’s me being nice enough. Don’t pull this crap again. It’s pretty boring.”
Aria got up from the couch and slammed her bedroom door hard.
Someone in the group chat brought up graduation trips, and Daxon couldn’t help but smile.
He grabbed his phone and called me, but got the automated “phone is turned off” message.
He tried calling and video calling several times, but couldn’t reach me at all.
He finally understood where that uneasy feeling was coming from.
Today he’d deliberately let Aria drink from his cup, expecting me to make a scene so he could end this cold war. But I hadn’t reacted at all.
He’d deliberately distanced himself from Aria in front of everyone, emphasizing that he wasn’t her boyfriend. I hadn’t shown any signs of happiness either.
Every time he asked about schools and majors, I never gave him a straight answer.
Daxon suddenly realized-I didn’t seem to care about him anymore!
With that, he rushed out the door, only realizing downstairs that he was wearing two different shoes.
He ran to my apartment building, only found my family’s windows were pitch black-nobody was home.
just as he was about to go upstairs, he ran into the cleaning lady my family usually hired.
“Ma’am, is Skylar home?”

“Oh, their whole family moved out. Said they won’t be back for a while, specifically asked me to come put dust covers on all the sofas and furniture. Skylar didn’t tell you?”
Daxon stood there speechless for a long time.
