Chapter 9
Chapter 9
Daxon’s bedroom door was slightly open. Aria sat by his bedside, holding a bowl of soup.
“Try some? I went to the market with your mom early this morning to get fresh vegetables. Your leg’s still healing-bone broth is good for you.”
Daxon turned his head away, not even looking at Aria.
“Daxon, wake up! Stop being such a mess. Skylar already broke up with you. She doesn’t want you anymore. Don’t you get it?”
Hearing this, Daxon froze for a moment, then started whimpering.
‘Leave me alone. I told you to leave me alone! If it wasn’t for you, I would’ve gotten that shot of Orion. Skylar would’ve been so happy with that gift.”
So Daxon got hurt trying to photograph Orion-my favorite constellation?
Aria got pissed. “If we hadn’t dragged you down the mountain, your leg would be completely fucked.”
‘So what if you did all that for her? She doesn’t even care. She’s got a new boyfriend!”
‘Look who’s taking care of you right now. Why can’t you just see me?”
Jaxon said helplessly, “Aria, I told you the first time you confessed-I like Skylar. Always have. You’re like family to me, like a sister. I never had any other eelings for you.”
Aria’s voice started choking up.
No feelings?! Then why do you track my period? Why’d you help me zip up my dress at night? Why’d you hold my hand during that murder mystery game?”
Jaxon was stunned for a few seconds, then mumbled, “Those were just small things. I didn’t realize you’d misunderstand.”
Small things? Daxon, you were playing with my feelings. You deserved to get dumped!”
Hearing this, Daxon suddenly knocked over the soup bowl in Aria’s hands. The scalding broth spilled all over both of them, and Aria screamed.
quickly grabbed wet towels and ice cubes and rushed into the room.
Skylar, you came back?!”
¡eeing me, Daxon’s eyes lit up, and he seemed to instantly forget about his injuries, grabbing the bed rail to try to sit up.
He suddenly remembered something and self-consciously ran his hand through his hair, not wanting me to see him like this.
Aria shot me a look and ran out with red eyes.
Skylar, you’re really not coming to NYU with me?” He looked at me pleadingly.
His leg was in a heavy cast, dark circles under his eyes-Daxon looked like a complete mess.
Yeah, Stanford University already sent me my acceptance letter.”
That’s good.” He forced a weak smile. “Our Skylar is amazing.”
It’s okay, it’s okay. I can apply for exchange programs. I heard there are spots available sophomore year. I’ll come find you soon.”
I shook my head. “Daxon, you don’t need to find me. Nobody dies from losing someone.”
“But I can’t live without you…” he suddenly yelled. “Eleven years, Skylar. We’ve known each other for eleven years!”
“I knew you wanted to study finance, so I applied for finance-related majors too. I spent the whole summer collecting industry info, planning how we’d get our CPA licenses together in college.”
“Don’t you know? For so long, every page of my plans involved you. Now that you don’t want me, what am I supposed to do?”
Wasn’t i the same way?
Chapter 9
Td bought a stack of photography books and stored them at the slow mail post office.
The post office would send Daxon one book every year.
I thought maybe after we graduated, got married, had our own home, we’d have a wall to display those books full of time and love.
But they’d only sent the first book when our relationship ended.
“Daxon, your neglect already used up ten years of my feelings. I’m really tired.”
“Stop hurting yourself for me. We’re adults now. We need to be responsible for ourselves.”
He looked at me, and the light in his eyes gradually dimmed.
