Chapter 6

Before I could think more about it, Gavin suddenly bowed deeply to me several times.

“Charlotte, I’ve already disciplined James. He’s not a bad person, just easily influenced by others.”

“Starting today, I’ll kick Alice out of the Hawke family. Please forgive James.”

Seeing this scene, James looked at Gavin in shock: “Dad! Have you been brainwashed by the Sutton family?!”

This is New York, the Hawke family has always been in charge! All these years, who could make you bow and scrape! How could you…”

Jefore James could finish, I interrupted him: “Enough, James.”

New York isn’t your New York. The Hawke family is finished.”

As soon as I spoke, my superior gave a signal.

wo agents immediately stepped forward and locked silver handcuffs on James and Alice’s wrists.

ty superior roared authoritatively: “James, Alice, you are now suspected of maliciously harming a Level 1 researcher from the National Security Laboratory!”

You’re under arrest!”

imes’s face instantly turned pale as he finally realized the severity of the situation.

lice was so frightened her legs went weak and she could barely stand: “Level 1 classified researcher? How is that possible…”

she’s just a country bumpkin – how could she…”

ly superior didn’t give them a chance to continue speaking and immediately waved his hand: “Take them away!”

mes and Alice were dragged out of the hospital lobby.

lice was still struggling and screaming: “What right do you have to arrest me?! I haven’t broken any laws!”

unes was even more unwilling, turning to shout at Gavin: “Dad! Think of a way to save me! I’m the heir to the Hawke family!”

umes’s father stood in place, his face pale with grief.

ut in the end, he didn’t dare speak up to stop them.

fter the doctor gave me quick preliminary treatment and bandaged my wound, my superior didn’t waste a second – he was already urging me to transfer to a ecure federal medical facility.

n the car, he kept sighing: “Charlotte, why didn’t you tell me you were injured?”

le turned to look at me, his expression full of worry: “And you went to the hospital alone…”

felt somewhat guilty and said quietly: “This experiment is so close to success, I didn’t want to delay the process.”

And that hospital was closer, so…”

My superior shook his head and gently patted my shoulder: “That’s not what I mean.”

I’m not blaming you for not protecting your hands and delaying the experiment. You’ve worked under me for ten years you’re like a daughter to me.*

“Seeing you like this, my heart…”

“I can’t even face your father now.”

Hearing him say this made me feel even worse: “Don’t say that. How could my father blame you?”

“Thank God you came in time, or James and Alice would have escaped punishment.”

Hearing this, my superior clenched his fists; “Unbelievable. The Hawke family looks glamorous on the surface, but behind it all? Complete disregard for the

law.”

“To think-you vouched for them, recommended we give the technology contract to Hawke Group!”

“But don’t worry, just the charge of assaulting you is enough to keep them locked up for ten years.”

I nodded, finally feeling relieved.

At the federal medical facility, professional doctors gave me a detailed examination.

Only then did I learn that my arm had actually been fractured from the secondary damage inflicted by James and Alice.

Most importantly, because Alice, with no medical experience, had used me to practice suturing, the wound was severely infected.

The doctor said it would take at least three months to fully heal before I could operate experiments again.

This meant our experimental progress would be delayed by an entire quarter.

When my parents received the news, they immediately dropped their work and rushed over.

As soon as my mother entered the room, she burst into tears, holding my hand and trembling: “I’m so sorry… this is all my fault…”

“If I hadn’t been so naive, thinking the Hawkes were a decent family, how could I have agreed to their marriage proposal!”

Dad stood to the side, his face grave, unable to say a word.

Just then, Mom’s phone rang.

It was Gavin calling.
