Mom looked at the caller ID and immediately became angry.
She answered the phone and shouted into the receiver: “Stop calling us!”
“My daughter Charlotte will never marry someone like James!”
The engagement is off! It’s over!”
After saying this, she deleted all of Gavin’s contact information in one go.
I was about to comfort them when the hospital room door was pushed open.
My superior walked in, holding a document: “Charlotte, I have good news for you.”
“The federal prosecutor is taking the case involving James and Alice with the utmost seriousness.”
“This isn’t just an assault on a classified researcher – we’ve also uncovered other illegal activities by the Hawke family.”
“They’re completely finished.”
I flipped through the document my superior handed me and was stunned by what I saw.
Hawke Group had been living a double life – charitable work on the surface, but behind it was money laundering, tax fraud, bribery, embezzlement, and even illegal fundraising…
The money added up to nearly $1 billion.
No wonder they acted like they were untouchable.
A few days later, due to the severity of the charges and federal implications, both suspects were summoned to testify under oath under the supervision of the listrict attorney’s office.
So I saw James and Alice again.
ames looked nothing like the person I once knew. He was unshaven, his hair was messy, and he clearly hadn’t rested or bathed in days.
