Chapter 15
His expression went uncomfortable.
Had she somehow figured out he’d just been with Anita?
But their spot had been completely hidden.
Besides, Noelia was terrified of the dark and ghosts–no way she would’ve wandered around alone in there,
That thought brought him some relief.
He gripped her shoulders, bending down to meet her eyes. The worry there seemed genuine.
“You should’ve told me where you were going. I couldn’t find you and thought something terrible had happened…”
Noelia stared at him, searching for any crack in his facade.
But lying came as naturally to him as breathing.
All those promises about honesty and transparency? Complete bullshit.
“Noelia, you’re hurt.”
He noticed her swollen ankle, frowning with concern as he scooped her up and carried her to a nearby bench.
“This is my fault. I should’ve stayed with you…”
He gently pulled down her sock to examine the injury, his touch incredibly careful.
Watching him, Noelia’s eyes filled with tears.
She remembered a track meet in college where she’d twisted her ankle–barely a sprain, really. But Leister, usually so composed, had actually cried from worry and refused to leave her side…
She’d been so touched then.
Yet just minutes ago in the haunted house, one complaint about Anita’s ankle had him abandoning his equally dark phobic wife to carry his mistress to safety.
“Hey, don’t cry.” Noticing her tears, Leister looked devastated. “Let me get some medicine. Just wait here, I’ll be right back…”
He kept glancing back as he walked away, worry written all over his face.
But Noelia couldn’t read him anymore,
How much of what he said and did was real? How much was performance?

Her phone buzzed.
Thinking it was Leister, she checked it.
[Want to make a bet? Think Leister’s coming back to you, or staying with me?]
It was Anita.
Noelia’s grip tightened on the phone.
She closed her eyes, didn’t respond, and turned off the screen.
So she waited. And waited. Clinging to that sliver of hope…
But Leister never came back.
It was maybe a few hundred yards to the nearest shop–even walking slowly, he should’ve returned by now.
Her face went pale.
Then her phone lit up again: [Photo]
The image showed Leister crouched down, applying ointment to Anita’s ankle–barely a scrape while Noelia’s was severely swollen, yet here he was abandoning his wife to tend to his mistress.
[You lose again.]
[Leister’s so caring. Thanks for training him so well for me! ?]
Tears burned Noelia’s eyes as she looked down at her own swollen, throbbing ankle.
One tear slipped down her cheek.
iss, this is for you!”
weet little voice broke through her misery.
Noelia quickly wiped her tears and looked up to see a little girl holding out a jacket.
“It’s getting chilly, Some nice man asked me to give this to you so you don’t catch cold!”
Before Noelia could ask questions, the child pressed the jacket into her arms and scampered away on tiny legs.
“Wait!”
Noelia tried to stand and follow, but the pain in her ankle stopped her. By the time she looked up, the girl had vanished.
She sighed and examined the jacket in her hands.

High–quality fabric, obviously expensive.
Strangely, the clean, masculine scent seemed familiar somehow.
But whose jacket could this be?
She ran through everyone she knew and came up empty. Probably just some random good Samaritan.
She didn’t put it on, just folded it neatly beside her.
Still, the kindness warmed her heart in a way nothing had for days.
The moment was brief but meaningful.
Leister finally returned, clearly having jogged back, breathing hard.
‘Sorry, babe! Had a little emergency on the way. Let me patch you up now…”
His ‘emergency‘ being Anita, of course.
Noelia just said flatly, “It’s fine.”
Seeing her compliance made his guilt spike.
Looking at her swollen ankle made him feel even worse.
Why the hell had he abandoned her for Anita?
He sat beside her remorsefully, placing her leg across his lap to tend the injury with extreme care.
Baby, I’m so sorry.”
He pulled out an expensive watch and fastened it around her wrist.
Wear this from now on. I’ll never lose track of you again. What happened in the haunted house was my mistake–it won’t
appen again.”
Voelia’s smile was hollow. “Okay.”
But you already lost me long ago…
Her compliance broke his heart, making his guilt even more overwhelming. He adjusted her clothes and pulled her close, as if physical contact could fill the emptiness inside him.
Noelia endured the faint scent of perfume clinging to him, her eyes cold as winter.
The next two days, probably driven by guilt, Leister barely left her side while she recovered. He worked from home, attending

to her every need.
Several times Noelia noticed Anita calling, but Leister’s responses were notably cold.
How interesting.
“Aren’t you going to answer that?”
Noelia was reading on the balcony when his phone buzzed again.
Leister declined the call irritably and brought her tea.
“Nothing important. We’re supposed to visit your grandmother for her birthday today.”
At the mention of her grandmother, Noelia’s expression softened.
Whatever issues she had with Leister, she’d put on a good show for Grandma’s sake.
she managed a small smile and accepted the tea.
Around noon, they picked up her grandmother and headed to the restaurant Leister had reserved for her seventieth birthday
celebration.
He was charming as always, making the elderly woman laugh.
You and Noelia just focus on being happy together, and this old lady will be content,” Grandma said meaningfully. “You’ve been married a few years now–isn’t it time to think about children?”
Voelia’s hands stilled while peeling an orange, unable to find words.
Leister covered her hand with his, stroking gently.
He smiled at Grandma. “We’re still young and enjoying our time together. No rush on kids–plus I don’t want Noelia to suffer hrough pregnancy just yet.”
His voice dripped with affection.
The words made Noelia’s stomach turn, but she forced a smile. “Grandma, work’s really intense right now. I’m still young–we can wait a few more years.”
The old woman nodded understandingly.
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door.
“Mr. Devereux…”
Tom Blake, his secretary, entered looking deeply troubled.
Leister frowned.
“Is it work? Go handle it,” Grandma said kindly.

For Tom to come personally, it had to be urgent. Noelia nodded. “Go see what’s wrong.”
Leister squeezed her hand reluctantly, apologized to her grandmother, and stepped outside.
Once the door closed, he loosened his tie and snapped coldly, “Didn’t I tell you to postpone everything today?”
Tom looked distraught. “Sir, we have a serious problem-”
