Chapter 58
Lately, Natalie had been living a pretty relaxed life. Out of all the interview requests she’d gotten, she’d only chosen one, setting it for three days later.
Once Sadie settled down, she checked in with Natalie to confirm she’d arrived safely. So far, everything was going exactly as
planned.
Natalie stayed in her hotel, catching up on the latest financial news Spencer Group’s stock price had crashed in the wake of Sienna’s scandal, wiping out hundreds of millions of dollars within days.
That was no small loss for the Spencers. Hugh would definitely pinall the blame on Sienna.
A moment later, Natalie’s phone buzzed. She checked it and saw a message from the private investigator asking to meet at a nearby cafe.
Natalie got up from the couch, grabbed a simple white outfit from her suitcase, and changed quickly before heading out.
The cafe was only a ten–minute walk from the hotel. When she pushed the door open, she noticed a man in a black baseball cap sitting at a table in the back.
She walked over and asked quietly, “Mr. Scurfield?”
The man nodded. “Hello, Ms. Sutton. I’m Malcolm Scurfield.”
Three months ago, Natalie had contacted Malcolm and asked him to track down witnesses from the car accident years earlier, along with the medical staff who had handled her surgery.
Until now, they’d only ever spoken over the phone. This was their first time meeting in person.
Once she confirmed the man before her was Malcolm, Natalie took a seat. “Did you find anything?”
Malcolm slid a kraft folder across the table and kept his voice low. “None of the medical staff who treated you are still at their original hospitals. In fact, they’ve all left Grendale.
“The lead surgeon died in a car accident two years ago, the assisting doctor was killed in a dispute with a patient’s family, and the nurse who helped with your surgery drowned a year ago. She suffered brain damage and doesn’t even recognize her own family.”
Everyone connected to the case ended up in some kind of accident. Natalie couldn’t believe it was a coincidence unless someone had planned it that way.
Malcolm continued, “This file is on a college student named Kevin Lambert. After three months of digging, I traced his route from that day. He would’ve passed your crash site right when it happened. Three years ago, he was a high school senior. Now he’s a junior at Hallsbrook College.”
Natalie pulled out a photo of Kevin–a bright, cheerful young man with a warm smile and a pair of charming dimples.
Could he be the breakthrough? The key to finally putting Sienna and Jason behind bars?
A glint of excitement lit up her eyes as she studied his face.
Hugh flew into such a violent rage at the Spencer residence that it shocked Daphne.
He had always been the perfect husband in all their years of marriage. This was the first time she had ever seen him so furious.
His eyes bulged as he snarled, “Daphne, have you lost your damn mind? You let Sienna hire a ghost artist? Did you even stop to think what would happen if this got out?”
Daphne flinched, her voice trembling with defensiveness. “I didn’t think it was that big of a deal! I just wanted what was best for
Sienna.”

Hugh let out a derisive snort. “Best for Sienna? You actually thinkd buy that? You know she can’t paint to save her life. You’re just building her up to feed your own vanity.”
Daphne couldn’t bring herself to look Hugh in the eye because he was right. She’d only pushed Sienna to become a famous artist to feed her own ego.
So when she discovered Sienna had hired a ghost artist, Daphne turned a blind eye. As long as it made Sienna famous, Daphne was willing to take the risk.
Now, shielding Sienna protectively behind her, Daphne snapped with reckless defiance. “What’s done is done. You’re not going to kill us both just to vent your anger, are you?”
