Hugh was seething. “You! Are you trying to kill me, Daphne?”
Daphne said nothing, her silence only fueling his anger.
Finally, he snapped, “You and Sienna aren’t going anywhere these next few days. You’ll stay right here and think about what you’ve done. And don’t expect me back anytime soon. I can’t even stand to look at you two right now!”
With that, Hugh stormed out.
After he left, the tension at home finally started to fade.
Sienna choked back a sob. “Mom, I never thought it would get this bad. If I’d known, I never would’ve done something so stupid.
When Daphne got back from the art exhibition, she was furious with Sienna. But after she cooled off, she realized Sienna wasn’t the one to blame. This was all that ungrateful snake Natalie’s fault.
Daphne pulled Sienna into a hug, comforting her, “None of this is on you, Sienna. If Natalie hadn’t lashed out and blown everything up, the Spencers would never have been dragged into this financial disaster.”
Sienna pressed her lips together, her pitiful whimpers thick with grievance. “Mom, if only I weren’t already married… I could’ve helped the family by entering a marriage alliance.”
Marriage alliance?
A thought struck Daphne. Why hadn’t she considered that earlier?
“I know what to do,” she said.
Sienna blinked. “What?”
Daphne’s lips curled into a cold smirk. “I raised Natalie for 18 years. Legally, she’s still a Spencer. Now that she’s divorced, it’s only fair that I handle her next marriage.”
Sienna’s tears vanished instantly, her interest piqued. “Mom, do you already have someone in mind?”
“The heir to Bluebrook Group was born with polio and still hasn’t found a wife at 30 years old. Natalie might’ve crawled her way out of the gutter, but these days? She’s almost passable for a man like that.”
Sienna’s lips curled into a smug smirk at Daphne’s words.
Natalie was done for. She wouldn’t be acting so high and mighty much longer.
Natalie couldn’t wait to see Kevin. The moment she got back, she booked a flight to Hallsbrook for the following evening.
She didn’t tell anyone, figuring there was no point in risking unnecessary complications.
Once she’d packed her bags, she ordered dinner from the hotel’s Dexian restaurant. As she waited for the food to arrive, her phone rang. An unknown number flashed on the screen.
Natalie picked up. “Hello?”
A familiar voice came through the phone, “Vera’s dying, Natalie. She wants to see you. You need to come home.”
Was that Daphne? Was Vera’s condition getting worse?
Natalie’s chest tightened. Vera’s condition had been stable. How could she suddenly take a turn for the worse?

Natalie’s frown deepened, her thoughts consumed with concern for Vera. She didn’t have the patience for Daphne’s accusations. “I’m on my way.‘
Natalie hung up the phone, snatched her bag from the coat stand, and hurried out. Just as she reached the door, something occurred to her.
She quickly checked her bag to make sure the taser was there. The, she fished out a small white pill bottle, popped one into her mouth, and finally stepped outside.
Anxious about Vera, Natalie sped the whole way, shaving ten minutes off the usual 30–minute drive. She rang the doorbell, and Sienna answered.
The moment Sienna saw Natalie, her blood boiled, her eyes burning with hate. But then, she thought of what was coming, and her rage melted into smug satisfaction.
She mocked, “Well, look who actually cares about that old hag.‘
