Chapter 69
Three years ago, Kevin went home after his extra class as usual. He was halfway home when the rain started pouring. Since he didn’t bring an umbrella, he quickened his pace and ran track home.
Somewhere not too far from the junction of Lumier Street and Wisdom Avenue, he witnessed a car accident.
A woman had been hit by a car and was lying in a pool of blood. The driver hurriedly got out of the car to check on her, but Kevin remembered clearly that the driver was a woman.
Not long after that, a young man rushed over. Although everything was barely visible at that time, Kevin could still see the man’s face when he walked under the street light.
However, he later saw from the news that the person who had turned himself in was a middle–aged man. How could that be? He had clearly seen that the driver was a woman.
He was terrified, thinking that the person had to be someone significant if they could get another person to be their scapegoat. If they were to find out that he was the witness, he was worried they would go after him.
Kevin had been quaking in his boots every day since then, keeping the truth to himself. Three years had gone by, but what had happened that night was etched on his mind.
He hadn’t expected that three years later, the victim from that accident would request him to testify.
Kevin could only flash a despicable look to conceal his guilt but Natalie’s offer made him waver.
It had always been Kevin’s dream to study abroad, yet he didn’t have the courage to come forward. He felt conflicted and couldn’t make up his mind.
Kevin didn’t reply. With his head hung low, he carried his backpack and walked toward the exit.
The two didn’t talk to each other on their way out of the campus. Just when they were about to part ways at the front gates, Natalie wrote her contact number on a paper before handing it to him.
“Kevin, this is my number. Contact me if you’ve thought things through,” she said.
Kevin seemed hesitant when he took the paper. The next instant, he tore the paper into pieces right in front of her.
That was his answer. He rejected her.
Kevin was frustrated, his tone harsh as he spat, “Aren’t you still alive now? You’re in perfect condition. The rich like you just like to bring trouble upon yourself.”
Natalie’s gaze dimmed, her heart tightening.
He was right that she was still alive, but only she knew what she had been through over the past three years. That experience would loom over her forever.
He wasn’t her, so why would he know how she truly felt? So, how could he say that she was bringing trouble upon herself?
Kevin glanced at her and strode forward.
This time, Natalie didn’t chase after him. She merely looked in the direction where he headed, calm and steady.
She had expected to be turned down by Kevin, and she could understand his concern. However, she wouldn’t give up on this witness.
Just then, Natalie heard the screeching sound of a vehicle. She looked behind subconsciously, only to see a mini
1/2
truck speeding over the limit.
The traffic light right at the front would turn red soon, but the mini truck was driving fast,
A sense of foreboding washed over Natalie. She frantically dashed toward Kevin and shouted, “Kevin, watch out!”
Kevin was already on the pedestrian path. When he heard Natalie, it was too late for him to react.
With a loud bang, Kevin landed hard on the ground.
Natalie missed the chance to pull him back. The mini truck brushed past her. Her arm and the side of her face were scraped, and blood trickled down her cheek to her arm
She couldn’t be bothered to check her injuries and swiftly ran to Kevin. He lay in a pool of crimson, and blood kept gushing out of his mouth.
Seeing that, Natalie immediately took out her phone to dial 911. Only then did she realize that her hands were trembling uncontrollably after she made the call.
She widened her eyes, the horror and unease somehow evoking a sense of remorse within her.
In a daze, Natalie raised her eyes and looked into the distance. After a brief moment of shock, she stared intently
at a car.
