Natalie was stunned.

The next instant, Rowan’s low voice rang in her ears, “I don’t need an ally who always gets herself h
at looks stupid.”
His gaze gradually fell upon her bandaged arm, and he felt his chest tightening. Frowning, he lowered his voice and said, “So… protect yourself.”
With that, Rowan let go of her.
Bearing an indifferent and calm demeanor, he glanced at her casually before averting his eyes. At the same time, Natalie became aware of something.
When he was hugging her just now, she could feel how anxious and worried he had been. But she thought she had to be imagining things, Why would a coldhearted man like him harbor such complicated feelings for her?
There was a subtle change in Natalie’s expression, and it was barely noticeable. “It was an accident. I’ll be more careful next time.”
Natalie didn’t look at him, but she could feel his gaze on her from the corner of her eye. That made her feel somewhat uncomfortable, so she made up an excuse to flee the scene. “I’ll check on Kevin. Mr. Mattel, don’t forget about your promise.”
“Okay,” he replied.
Natalie left, and Rowan stared at her back, his gaze full of tenderness. He stretched out his hand, yet it felt as if she was out of reach.
Rowan knew he shouldn’t get close to her, but he just couldn’t help it. As his eyes dimmed, he frowned slightly and clenched his fists.
With Rowan handling Kevin’s affairs, Natalie could be at ease.
Rowan told her to go back and rest. He would have someone deal with the hospital and inform her once it was done.
Natalie followed his order and dragged herself back to the hotel, completely exhausted. The sun had risen, but she was too tired, Yet, she woke up again after resting for a while.
She couldn’t sleep well with something on her mind.
Natalie took her phone to have a look. There weren’t any missed calls or messages. Just when she was about to set her phone down, it buzzed.
It was a text message.
Natalie had a feeling that the stranger had to be him. She tapped on the chat and saw the message from the other end.
“I’m Rowan Mattel.”
Staring at those words on the screen, Natalie could almost imagine how serious and tense he had been when he typed the message.
Natalie replied, “Yeah, I know.”
As soon as the text message was sent, Rowan made a video call.
Natalie still couldn’t get used to it, so she only answered the call after a few seconds. Rowan’s handsome face immediately came into sight.
He was good–looking and had a nice complexion, but he seemed slightly unwell.
Natalie asked, “How’s Kevin?”

Rowan stared at her and replied calmly, “Kevin’s conscious now. There won’t be any aftereffects if he takes the time to recuperate later.
“Also, I’ve made the arrangement to fake Kevin’s death. They’ll announce around noon that Kevin’s condition worsens and that he’s dead despite their attempt at resuscitation.“.
Rowan and Natalie were allies, in a way. He had indeed done her a big favor, so she should still express her gratitude.
Out of courtesy, Natalie said, “Mr. Mattel, I’ll treat you to a meal when we’re back in Grendale later.”
Rowan didn’t reply, so she thought she wasn’t sincere enough. Just as she was thinking how to mend the situation, Rowan replied, “Okay. It’s a deal.”
Natalie was tongue–tied, wondering why he sounded that serious.
Their brief conversation ended, and they didn’t even waste a second talking about unimportant matters.
Holding the phone, Natalie spaced out. After a while, she chuckled and walked to the balcony.
Hallsbrook was located by the shore, so the air felt damp. It was comfortable as the breeze brushed against her face. She gradually closed her eyes and fell into its gentle embrace.
A brief moment later, the ethereal sight of nature in her mind was replaced with Rowan’s face, and Natalie quickly opened her eyes
She wondered if she had been brainwashed after interacting with him too often lately.
