Even now, Liam was still making excuses for Chloe.
“Don’t you think that excuse sounds ridiculous, even to yourself?” I scoffed.
My voice was weak and hoarse, but clear enough.
“Can’t you really see that she likes you, and that’s why she deliberately targeted me?!”
Liam choked, stammering.
After a long pause, he finally tried to argue:
“Well… maybe she misunderstood? But she definitely didn’t do it on purpose.”
“Scarlett, we’re all friends, let’s just drop this. Chloe is still so young; if she gets a criminal record, her life will be ruined.”
Friends?
We were definitely not friends.
Hearing me laugh, Liam faltered a bit.
“Why are you being so aggressive? I was also just caught up in their teasing back then, I made a mistake.”
“I tried to help you during that time, but you were stubborn and uncooperative…”
I was practically fuming at this absurd statement.
So, it was my fault, the victim, for not being cooperative?
It seems some people, even when they know they’re wrong, will find every way to shift the blame onto others.
“Liam!”
When I spoke again, my voice was incredibly calm.
“We’re done. And please remember, I won’t let Chloe get away with this, nor any of her accomplices.”
With that, I hung up.
And blacklisted his number without a second thought.
The sunlight streamed through the window, warm and comforting.
I closed my eyes, savoring the moment of peace.
The suffocating feeling in my chest dissipated significantly.
Mom pushed the door open.
Seeing me like this, she smiled reassuringly.

Seeing me like this, she smiled reassuringly.
“I’m glad you’re coming to terms with it. I was worried you’d still cling to that scumbag.”
“No way, I can’t hate him fast enough.”
I cuddled into Mom’s embrace like a child.
Mom sat on the edge of the bed, gently stroking my hair.
“My daughter, you’ve grown up.”
I looked at the tenderness and love in Mom’s eyes, sniffled, and nodded firmly.
I thought I had seen enough of the Liam family’s true colors.
Who knew that a week later, while I was sunbathing downstairs at the hospital,
I saw a thin, dark–skinned middle–aged woman burst in.
The security guard looked apologetic.
“I’m so sorry, Miss Vance, she said she had a heart condition, so we didn’t dare stop her.”
My bodyguards, who were with me, quickly intercepted her.
The woman yelled at me from behind the bodyguards.
“Scarlett Vance, I’m your mother–in–law!”
I was stunned for a moment.
I was a young woman who had just graduated; where did I get a mother–in–law?
But upon closer inspection, I noticed the woman’s face bore a striking resemblance to Liam’s.
My pupils slightly narrowed.
The woman angrily screamed at me,
“What’s wrong with you, kid? This is our first time meeting as mother–in–law and daughter–in–law, and you let your bodyguards treat me so disrespectfully?”
The bodyguards remained impassive, their tall figures blocking her completely.
Brenda, Liam’s mother, seeing she couldn’t get close to me, simply sat on the ground.
