Chapter 7
The series of sneezes brought tears to my eyes.
Just then, Colton rushed into the office, clearly having hurried
over on purpose.
The moment Rebecca saw Colton, she immediately swayed her hips as she walked over to him, preening like a peacock showing off its feathers.
She said, “Colton, since when did someone like her become worthy of being your woman? Vanessa not only fails to share your burdens but keeps causing you trouble.”
I had no interest in whatever performance this woman was putting on. I quickly walked to the window, hoping to get some
fresh air.
The atmosphere around Colton suddenly turned ice-cold. Despite it being summer, his presence made the office feel like a
freezer.
He completely ignored Rebecca, who was practically throwing herself at him, causing her to nearly stumble in her high heels.
He quickly walked over and steadied me. “Are you okay? Do you need to go to the hospital?”
I waved my hand dismissively. “It’s not that serious. I just need some fresh air. Is your meeting over?”
I could clearly sense Colton’s expression soften considerably as he approached me.
After confirming I was fine, he even joked with me, “No, the meeting’s on hold. I was worried you’d feel wronged and run off with your sister again.”
Seeing us both ignore her, Rebecca began desperately trying to make her presence known.
She said, “Colton, it’s been so long since we’ve seen each other. I specially made lunch for you. With so much going on at the company, you must be exhausted.”
She thoughtfully took out containers from her thermal bag and began arranging them on his desk.
“Don’t!” I blurted out, trying to stop Rebecca.
Colton had an almost obsessive habit about his desk-nothing except work-related items was allowed on it, and even their placement had strict requirements.
The company had already gone through several cleaning staff
because of this.
But Rebecca completely ignored me. She assumed I was just trying to prevent her from showing her devotion to Colton.
Now, even though she was my rival, I felt sorry for her for a few seconds.
Sure enough, the next moment Colton called security: “Throw all this stuff out, along with this woman of unknown origin!”
Rebecca hadn’t expected Colton to be so ruthless.
As security was dragging her away, she shouted, “Colton! I did this all for you! How am I not better than her! Have you forgotten? If the Lynch family hadn’t helped the Hoffman family through the financial crisis back then, how could your family have achieved what it has today!”
Colton raised his hand, signaling security to pause. “Don’t think I don’t know that the Lynch family swallowed thirty million dollars in cash from the Hoffman family back then. You think throwing out a few million dollars can cover up these facts? It seems my methods weren’t harsh enough before, which is why your family has managed to survive until now.”
With that, he pressed the intercom: “Ivan, starting today, launch a full-scale attack on Lynch family enterprises. Acquire everything that can be acquired.”
Although I didn’t understand much about business operations, I
knew that for the current Hoffman family, completely destroying the Lynch family would be effortless.
The woman who had been arrogantly shouting moments ago was now pale as a sheet, no longer struggling as security dragged her away.
She finally realized she had messed with the wrong person.
