Chapter 14

The doctor said nothing more and injected anesthesia into Willow’s body

In her extreme terror, Willow didn’t lose consciousness but watched wideeyed as the doctor cut open her belly. The baby inside already had a heartbeat, lying peacefully thereif they just took him out, this child could live

Willow screamed and cried, My baby! My baby!”

But with one injection, the child who had just been showing a heartbeat gradually lost all signs of life

Ahhhh!!Willow’s scream was heartwrenching. Even with the anesthesia, she seemed to still feel the pain

Her childthe child she’d longed for all this timewas just gone like that

She struggled with bloodshot eyes. Mason Vale, Mason Vale! This was our child! How could you be so heartless!”

No one answered her. The doctor removed the dead fetus and tossed it into the trash can, worthless

Mason turned and left. He had other things to dohe couldn’t stay here forever

Willow passed out in her screaming agony, tears streaming down her face. She didn’t even get one last look at her child. After the surgery was complete, she was immediately transferred to the Vale family’s basement

Meanwhile, Mason couldn’t reach Lyra’s parents, which meant the airline couldn’t process Lyra’s remains. He went to the airport again, explained his relationship with Lyra, and successfully obtained a small box containing her ashes

This shallow, light little boxthis was all that was left of his Lyra

He brought her home and contacted the cemetery. Just as he hung up, his phone rang againan unknown number

Mason answered

Hello, Mr. Vale. This is the civil affairs bureau. The divorce certificate you and Ms. Blackwood filed for a month ago is ready. Please come pick it up when you have time.”

The staff member’s voice jolted him awake, once again reminding him that he and Lyra were no longer connected in any way. His heart seized with pain, as if pierced by countless needles

Mason took several deep breaths before he could speak with difficulty. I understand. I’ll come by later.”

Then he hung up. Mason gripped his phone tightlynot only had Lyra left him, but their marriage had also ended by his own doing

He had truly lost her and could never get her back.

Mason’s eyes stung with tears. If only he had sent Willow away immediately, if only he had truly treated Willow as nothing more than a tool for bearing a child, if only he hadn’t kept following his parentswishes, if only he hadn’t given Lyra that plane ticketwould they not have ended up like

this

The more he considered all these what ifs,the more suffocated he felt. He’d had countless chances to prevent this

He had the driver take him to the cemetery, where he personally buried the urn in the earth and covered it handful by handful

On the headstone, Lyra smiled radiantlya photo from their happiest moments. But how long had it been since he’d seen such a brilliant smile from her

Looking at that face so close yet so far away, Mason couldn’t hold back anymore. He knelt before Lyra’s grave and wept uncontrollably

Heavy rain poured down, drowning out his voice, mixing tears with rainwater, soaking his thin frame and washing away the hope in his heart

Mason knelt before Lyra’s grave all night, speaking countless words of regret, but he would never hear her reply again
