Chapter 20
When Mason received the message, he had been searching for nearly three months with no leads. He’d even started wondering if Lyra really was dead, if all his efforts were pointless, if he’d never see her again.
But today, he finally got a message from abroad. Though it was just a blurry photo, Mason recognized his Lyra at first glance.
She was alive!
He could see her again!
Mason immediately ordered the butler to investigate. He learned the location was in Canada, and that Lyra’s parents were there too. Why hadn’t he thought of that before? Mason felt reborn with joy–Lyra had been right, there all along, he just hadn’t realized it.
He bought a ticket to Canada. Mason couldn’t wait another moment.
Sitting on the plane, his heart raced with nerves. He was terrified Lyra wouldn’t forgive him, wouldn’t want to see him. But then he thought–they’d loved each other for so many years, how could she really bear to leave? Once he fixed everything and she saw his sincerity, she’d definitely forgive him and come back.
[en hours later, Mason landed in Canada and went straight to the Blackwoods‘ house.
At the door, bodyguards stopped him.
‘Mr. and Mrs. Blackwood, I’m here for Lyra! I know she’s back–I just need to see her once!”
Mason shouted from the doorway. Lyra didn’t come out, but her parents appeared at the door.
‘How dare you show your face here!” Mrs. Blackwood’s eyes blazed with fury the moment she saw him.
Mason knew he was at fault–the Blackwood family’s hatred was justified. But he desperately needed to see Lyra. Even with Mrs. Blackwood’s harsh words, he kept his head down and took it.
‘Ma’am, I know you’re disappointed in me. I know I was wrong.
Willow’s child, Willow herself–I’ve dealt with all of it. They’ll never appear in front of Lyra again. As for my parents, the Vale family owes Lyra. If she doesn’t want to see them, no one from the old mansion will bother her.
I know I messed up before. I just want one chance. Lyra and I loved each other for so long–this time I failed her. I’ll pay any price, I just need to see Lyra once. Please.”
Mason spoke with complete sincerity. To win Lyra back, he was willing to give up everything.
But for her daughter’s sake, Mrs. Blackwood wouldn’t easily give in to Mason. Besides, Lyra wasn’t even home today.
Mrs. Blackwood laughed mockingly. “Lyra’s not home. Your words are wasted.”
With that, Mrs. Blackwood ordered the door shut.
Mason panicked for a moment. If Lyra wasn’t here, where could she be?
Looking at the closed door, Mason made up his mind. “Ma’am, I’ll wait here until Lyra comes back.”
He stood at the door. He’d just taken a ten–hour flight and was already exhausted to the breaking point, running purely on willpower.
He stood from day to night, until late evening when he finally saw two figures slowly approaching.
He immediately recognized one as Lyra. But before Mason could feel relief, he noticed Lyra was with a strange man–and they were holding hands!
He watched Lyra laugh at something the man said, her face lighting up with a smile. The pain in his heart was excruciating as he rushed forward.
