Chapter 9
A loud “buzzing” filled his head. Mason felt dizzy and disoriented. Lyra was dead? How was that possible!
He pulled out his phone and immediately dialed Lyra’s number. No answer–just the cold mechanical voice repeating over and over.
His fingers trembling, he dialed again and again, only to hear “unable to connect” each time.
He smashed his phone! The annoying voice finally stopped, but where could he find Lyra? How could something have happened to her?
Mason stumbled, pushing past his assistant, trying to run out the door, but Willow blocked his way.
“Mason, this is our wedding. Where are you going?”
She tried to grab Mason, but he roughly shook her off. His parents disapprovingly stepped in front of him.
“Mason, what are you doing! Whatever’s happened, we should finish the wedding first. Otherwise, with all these guests here, do you want them laughing at the Vale family?”
His father’s face showed anger, but Mason couldn’t care less. His mind was filled with nothing but Lyra. Only by confirming she was safe could he find
peace.
Mason shoved his father aside. “I need to find Lyra! Nobody stop me–I need to find Lyra!” he roared.
Mason took a cab straight to the airport, his mind in complete chaos. How could Lyra possibly be dead!
When he arrived at the airport, he saw staff rushing around frantically, as if something major had happened. But he couldn’t focus on that–he grabbed the first person he saw.
“The flight to Switzerland today–it’s fine, right? Safe? Nothing happened?”
He desperately needed an answer, but the staff member’s face filled with grief.
“I’m sorry, sir. Today’s flight to Switzerland has crashed. They’re announcing it over the speakers…”
Only then did Mason realize the overhead speakers were repeatedly broadcasting news of this major accident.
“Breaking news: Today, a flight from our province bound for Switzerland crashed fifteen minutes after takeoff, falling from the sky. 178 passengers–no survivors!”
“Breaking news: Today…”
“No survivors!”
Those four words hammered into his brain. Mason seemed to lose his soul, staring blankly ahead as he mumbled, “Impossible… impossible. How could Lyra really be dead…”
He’d just seen her yesterday–how could she be dead today….
He wanted nothing more than to fly immediately to the crash site to see for himself. He refused to believe Lyra was really gone!
The staff member pulled out a sheet of paper. “This is the passenger manifest. Are you family of one of the victims?”
Mason nodded, mechanically scanning the list until he found Lyra’s name.
In that instant, he seemed to regain his senses as the staff member handed him a death certificate. Lyra Sinclair–confirmed deceased.
At that moment, all sound around him disappeared.
The staff member’s lips moved several times. “What was your relationship to the victim?”

What relationship?
What relationship… His mind flashed through all the moments he’d shared with Lyra, scene after scene playing before his eyes.
His throat was dry, his voice barely a croak. “Lyra was my wife.”
The grief on the staff member’s face deepened. “My condolences, sir. Your wife has passed away.”
