Chapter 15
He always thought that Isabella used to be with Interpol and was a rebellious member of Interpol.
With such a family background and such skills, no one could bully her.
So, he had never really worried about whether she would be mistreated in the Keane family.
What worried him was actually Jessie, his stepmother in name only.
He thought about Jessie being alone, never getting his father’s approval, living in the vast Keane family for seven years, experiencing all the cold looks and indifference.
He thought more about the time when he was young and seriously ill, on the verge of death, she selflessly donated a kidney to save his life.
So, he did his best to protect her, always putting her first and keeping her under his wing.
Slowly, this heart seemed to lean towards her.
But he had never delved into whether this mixture of guilt, pity, gratitude, and responsibility could be considered love.
Looking back now, perhaps it was never really a romantic relationship between us.
Jessie was completely unaware of the storm raging inside him, still immersed in the beautiful dream he had woven for himself.

With anticipation in her eyes and a soft voice, she said, “If that’s the case, she said, “If that’s the case, then shall I marry you in this wedding dress?”
“Not good.”
James’s brain hadn’t even had time to think before his mouth, almost faster. than his consciousness, coldly spat out these two words.
Jessie’s smile froze instantly, the light in her eyes dimmed, filled with disbelief and hurt.
“Why?”
“James, we clearly… we both knew each other’s feelings, didn’t we?”
“Isabella has also left, she divorced you! Can’t we still be together? she asked urgently.”
James suddenly remembered the conversation he had overheard between Jessie and the maid in the backyard earlier.
“It’s better not to have a wedding, just get the certificate and have our names written into the family tree.”
Originally, she stuck to this idea.
There was no emotion in James’s deep eyes as he replied, “You’re right.”
“I promised you that I would marry you.”
Jessie’s eyes suddenly lit up, with excitement almost overflowing from the depths of her eyes.
But that brightness only lasted for a moment, then dimmed again.
She seemed to have thought of something, her voice also lowered a few

degrees, cautiously probing:
“Then… can we just get a certificate and a family tree, okay?”
“The wedding was too extravagant and wasteful, all grand and ostentatious. I’m afraid the reporters will write inaccurately again, which is not good for you or the Keane Group. So, how about we cancel it?”
James suddenly reached out and grabbed Jessie’s wrist.
Jessic winced in pain, her face turning pale as she looked at him in horror.
“How could that be possible? James‘ voice remained calm, yet carried a chilling sense of oppression.”
“We finally overcame the obstacles and could be together openly. How could I possibly mistreat you?”
His other hand gently stroked her pale check.
The action was gentle, but the eyes were cold without a hint of warmth.
“I wanted to give you a grand wedding that would make a sensation throughout the city.”
“I want to invite all the media to tell them in detail about the earth- shattering secret love story between us over the past seven years.”
“Let them all know, I, James, how much I love you, Jessie. Jessie’s face paled instantly.”
“No way!”
She almost screamed, without even thinking, she retorted.

As soon as the words came out of her mouth, she regretted it.
James’s eyes grew colder inch by inch, disappointment spreading like thick ink in her evasive pupils.
Jessie’s heart raced as she quickly forced out a smile that was even uglier than crying, her voice trembling:
“James, what I meant was… it’s not the right time yet…”
“You know those people in the media, in case they start writing nonsense again, about you, about the Keane Group…”
James stared at her expressionlessly.
Those deep, bottomless black eyes at the moment were like two deep ancient wells, unable to reflect any warmth.
“When will that be?”
His voice was like a sharp ice pick, stabbing straight into Jessie’s heart.
Jessie opened her mouth, feeling as though something was blocking her throat, unable to utter a single word.
I could only look at him in vain, with panic filling my eyes.
James tugged at the corner of his mouth, his smile sending a chill down. the spine.
“There was never such a day, Jessie.”
