Chapter 6
Studying abroad wasn’t easy. I rented a spacious, bright apartment and hired a Chinese nanny to cook for me. I didn’t want to shortchange myself-after all, I was a little fortune in my own right.
The heavy workload quickly got me into a routine. My classmates were all great, and because of my outstanding abilities,
I was accepted into the Al Lab. The top senior there was also from Britain, his name was Bo Harrison.
I admired his academic prowess. The more we exchanged ideas, the more I realized the greatness of technology.
One day, while Bo and I were passionately debating artificial intelligence and algorithm design,
the phone suddenly rang.
Without thinking, I picked it up, still with a bit of irritation on my face.
Bo, on the other hand, looked at me gently, his eyes sparkling with interest.
“Hello?”
“Eva.”
I glanced at the unfamiliar number, instantly recognizing the voice-Mr. Hawthorne.
“What is it?”
“Where did you put the ruby cufflinks you bought me?”
“They’re in the pocket of the tuxedo in the wardrobe.”
“I can’t find the dark blue plaid casual jacket either.”
“I sent it for dry cleaning. Didn’t anyone pick it up?” There was silence on the other end, and I wondered, surely the maid hadn’t forgotten to pick up the clothes for five or six months?
“Also, where did you learn the massage technique? My leg’s been hurting again.”
“That was Dr. Montgomery’s technique from Eastwood House. You can have someone learn it and give you massages.”
I was starting to feel a little irritated, unsure what Mr. Hawthorne wanted from me.
“How have you been lately?”
“Fine, Mr. Hawthorne. If that’s all, I’m hanging up!”
“There’s more! Eva, I miss you!”
“Heh… Wait, is lily busy tonight?”
His voice sounded tired, weak, lacking the usual deep tone. “I swear there’s nothing between me and her, and I’ve already
explained it to you. Lily can’t swim, how can you not believe me?”
“Enough, Mr. Hawthorne. Don’t call again.”
I hung up immediately, my resolve dissipating in an instant. I pouted and sat down on the chair.
Bo suddenly leaned in, his voice gentle, “Did you break up?”

“Yeah.”
“Don’t mourn someone cheated. They’re not worth it?”
I couldn’t help but laugh, “How sure are you that he cheated?”
Bo looked at me seriously, “I’m sure. You know where his clothes are, and you know the massage technique. You’ve given so much in this relationship. If you’re breaking up, it’s because he wronged you.”
His words hit me with such sincerity that it was hard to hold back my tears.
Yes, I had given so much, hadn’t I? It was so clear to outsiders, so why couldn’t Mr. Hawthorne see it?
Tears flowed uncontrollably, flooding out like a dam breaking. In all those years of being misunderstood, I had poured my
heart into it-whether it was family or love, I had failed in both.
Suddenly, I was pulled into a warm embrace. The person didn’t hold me tightly, just gently patted my back.
“It’s all over. You’re extraordinary. Losing you is their loss.”
I quietly cried on Bo’s shoulder, letting myself cry recklessly for once.
