Chapter 9
“Tsk tsk…” my friend commented, “Getting shipped off overseas and cut off from the
Luther family’s inner circle—all for some woman. What a waste.”
I wasn’t surprised by this outcome at all. I said calmly, “The Luther family’s real heir apparent was always the eldest son.”
It’s just that Patrick had always been the favorite, which gave people the wrong impression.
During my four years as his secretary, I saw it all too clearly. It wasn’t that he lacked ambition—he just was never a match for his low–key older brother.
My friend couldn’t help speculating, “Think he’ll take Lily overseas with him?”
“If it’s true love, of course he will.‘
“I bet he won’t.” My friend shook her head. “Their so–called love can’t survive this kind of
upheaval.”
I shrugged. “Who knows…”
Before Patrick left, he asked to meet. I flatly refused.
He blocked my car on my way home from work. My driver looked at the man standing in
front of our vehicle and asked uncertainly, “Ms. Spencer, should we get out and see what he wants?”
“Ignore him.”
The driver backed up and moved the car to the side of the road to avoid blocking traffic.
The rain outside was getting heavier, and he was quickly soaked through. I watched coldly, unmoved.
It was time he experienced what waiting felt like.

After about an hour, he staggered and nearly collapsed, shouting, “Do you hate me so much that you won’t even see me?
“But I need to see you. I have something to say before I leave.”
My driver cautioned gently, “The rain’s too heavy. If he stays out there much longer, something bad might happen.”
I finally opened the door, grabbed an umbrella, and got out.
He was completely drenched and looked much thinner. The whole picture was one of defeat
-gone was his former confidence and swagger.
I’d heard he’d been drowning his sorrows at bars, nearly drinking himself to death before
being rushed to the hospital.
I’d also heard that Lily had lost the baby, and they’d been fighting constantly. Their former
sweet romance was completely over.
Reality rarely offers fairy tale endings.
I looked at him coldly. “I don’t particularly want to see you.”
He smiled bitterly. “You can just stop loving someone like that? Hannah, you’re ruthless.”
“Ruthless?” I brushed my wind–tousled hair back. “You’re just too full of yourself.”
Patrick sighed and said with difficulty, “Hannah, I regret everything.”
Some people are like air–you don’t realize how important they are until they’re gone, and
then you ache, you can’t breathe, you miss them desperately.
“I realize now that I did love you. I just forgot to cherish you. I always thought that no matter when I turned around, you’d be right there waiting for me.”
I listened quietly, feeling neither particularly sad nor moved–just amused. So you only appreciate what you have after you lose it?

The light in his eyes slowly died. He gave me an embrace tinged with quiet sadness, and I felt hot tears on my neck.
“I’m sorry.”
I stood there watching him walk away step by step, finally disappearing from my life completely.
“Goodbye forever.”
In the end, Patrick never left. The night before his departure, an emotionally unstable Lily stabbed him. He lost too much blood and fell into a coma.
Lily was arrested immediately and seemed to have completely lost her mind.
At the crucial moment, Patrick woke up and ultimately chose not to press charges. Their relationship was finally, definitively over.
I saw Lily again at an art exhibition.
She’d lost a lot of weight and was wearing a simple cotton dress, studying a painting intently.
