No wonder I woke up to so many texts from my friends asking me if I was fine.
I did not check out of the hotel that day. I figured I’d wait and see how things played out.
Judging by how unhinged Nathan was yesterday, he’d definitely still be waiting for me outside my apartment.
That evening, I asked the apartment’s security guard to check things out for me. Sure enough, Nathan was camped out by the elevators.
He even mistook the security guard for me and hugged him on sight.
My original plan was to get the security guard to kick Nathan out, but Nathan had played his cards well and garnered the guard’s sympathy.
Later, the security guard called me and tried to persuade me to come home. “Ms. Liesel, I’m sure your boyfriend has learned his lesson. Just forgive him this once. You didn’t see it, but there were cigarette butts all over the ground. If he continues smoking this way, he’s going to get sick!”
As it turned out, the security guard’s words came true.
A few days later, I heard from Anne that Nathan was sick.
After several nights waiting for me outside my apartment in the chilly weather, he ended up with a fever and was hospitalized.
Apparently, he was still I calling out my name when he was unconscious.
I couldn’t help but laugh.
After all the games he’d played with
me,
he
was now pretending to be some kind of tragic, devoted lover.
Many of our friends kept hinting that I should visit him, but I refused every time.
I could imagine exactly how Nathan had asked our friends to convince me to visit him from his hospital bed.
Now that Nathan was hospitalized, I could go back to my apartment.
Just as I finished checking out, my phone buzzed. It was a message from Lucille. “You’re good, Yvonne. Do you really think playing hard–to–get and pulling this disappearing act is going to make Nathan love you?
“He’s just reacting this way because your sudden absence caught him off guard. Once he gets used to it, you’ll realize you never meant a thing to him!”
It was only then that I realized that I had forgotten to block Lucille. Ignoring her taunts, I blocked her number without a second thought.
Finally, I returned to my apartment. Just as I lay down on my bed, my mother called me.
She had probably heard about Nathan’s hospitalization from his parents and wanted to know what was going on.
I didn’t hide anything. Honestly, I told her that I didn’t know what was going on either.
Mom was surprised. “Aren’t you with Nathan now? How could you not know he’s sick?”

I immediately denied that claim. “With Nathan? What are you talking about? I haven’t seen him in ages. Don’t say things like that. It would ruin my chances with other men!”
After a shocked pause, her voice rose sharply in chastisement.
It took quite a bit of effort for me to brush her off.
1 knew what Nathan was trying to do–he was getting my family to pressure me into seeing him. Since our friends couldn’t persuade me, he’d decided to go straight to my family.
