Chapter 17
Not long after I left the hospital room, someone called out to me.
“Mint Bennett.”
Elise Simmons walked straight toward me.
Her expression was stern and cold.
“Can we talk?”
I looked at her in confusion.
To be honest, I wouldn’t even call our relationship one of casual acquaintances.
Even though we’d run into each other a few times since I came back, we hadn’t exchanged a single word.
I couldn’t imagine what there was to talk about–except, of course… Noah.
As expected, I was right. Elise had come for Noah.
“You avoided Noah at first, and now you show up here on purpose. Mint Bennett, what exactly are you trying to do?”
I had no idea what had gotten into her, but she came at me with nothing but accusations.
I was puzzled. Didn’t I just explain it? I was only here to check on Noah.
“You cut off contact with him for seven years, and now that you’re back, you cause all this drama. I never realized you
were this manipulative!”
Like Noah, Elise didn’t believe a word I said.
Her face was expressionless, her eyes completely devoid of warmth.
And then I understood-
Elise had seen the messages in the alumni chat too.
She thought I was playing games–coming back to rekindle something with Noah.
Her eyes held a mix of suspicion and hostility.
She looked nothing like the timid, cautious girl I remembered from high school.
