Chapter 2
But my emotions didn’t settle just because I walked away from that conversation.
If anything, once I was seated on the plane, seatbelt fastened, planning to get through the seven–hour international flight with some sleep, my mood grew even heavier.
The moment I closed my eyes, that name haunted me-
Noah Carter.
He was like a curse that had never been lifted. Just hearing his name was enough to unleash memories buried in the depths of my mind, like quicksand in a desert–slow, but impossible to resist.
He had been the boy next door, the one I grew up with, and the first student in Westfield High’s history to earn a perfect
SAT score.
Over the course of three years, Noah brought home more than twenty awards for math, physics, and engineering
competitions.
His certificates once filled the entire honors wall.
In the summer seven years ago, he earned near–perfect scores on both the SAT and AP exams, instantly becoming the
nation’s top scholar that year.
Harvard and Stanford rushed to send him admission offers, even breaking the rules–promising that if he chose one of them, he could bring someone along to be admitted with him.
That girl at the airport wasn’t wrong.
At the time, those two elite universities had been willing to do just about anything to recruit him.
Even before Noah had made a decision, the entire school was already buzzing with the news-“Of course the extra spot
will go to Mint.”
After all, everyone knew that Noah and I had grown up together. We were inseparable, deeply devoted.
Back then, I had truly believed that we would walk the road to the future side by side.
But now, when I thought back to the way that girl at the airport had gushed with admiration and envy, a bitter irony crept
into my heart.
So it turned out that even after seven years, some people still didn’t know–The one who entered Harvard with Noah
Carter wasn’t me.
