Chapter 8
After Raelyn was sent to the hospital, Knox was not allowed to visit her.
A beautiful woman sat by her bedside.
“You’re Raelyn, aren’t you?”
“Don’t be afraid. I’m Vincent Blackstone’s mother.”

Mrs. Blackstone had a youthful face, but her hair was already half gray. The corners of her eyes were still red and swollen-clearly, she had been crying a lot.
She held Raelyn’s hand. “The arranged marriage is actually just a show we’re putting on for Vincent’s grandfather.”
“The old man is elderly and a bit confused. He can’t accept that his grandson sacrificed himself. He’s been seeking remedies everywhere, and finally, in desperation, consulted a fortune teller who said that finding a bride for Vincent might help him recover.”
“But don’t worry, this is just a ceremony. After the wedding, I can send you abroad. You’re still young-would you like to continue your studies?”
Raelyn gently shook her head.
She squeezed the woman’s hand in return.
“Don’t give up so soon. Perhaps a miracle really will happen.”
When she was discharged and returned home, she found the living room of the Winters mansion filled with boxes of gifts.
Skylar was beaming. “Sister, these are all from Lord Kingston. He’s already proposed to me.”
“Once that Blackstone invalid dies, I’ll immediately marry into the Kingston family. You’ll be invited to my wedding then.”
She sighed.
“It can’t be helped. We’re all human, but the differences between us are so vast.”
“Both the Blackstone and Kingston families are fighting to marry me, each being more generous than the other. But you, sister, only have a poor fiancé, and our family has to financially support you two. How pitiful.”
Raelyn was curious. “Weren’t you calling him ‘Knox’ affectionately and throwing yourself into his arms whenever something happened? I thought your feelings for each other ran deep. Aren’t you upset that he wants to marry me?”
Skylar shrugged indifferently.
“He’s just a nobody. How could he compare to Lord Kingston? Money alone doesn’t give you the Kingston family’s status.”
Raelyn felt like laughing.
Fingering the voice recorder in her pocket, Raelyn could hardly wait to see Knox’s expression when he discovered Skylar’s true face.
Two days before going to the Blackstone family, Raelyn visited the orphanage director who had cared for her.
The kind old woman’s face was full of joy. “Ray-Ray, I hear you’re getting married. I don’t have much to give you, but take this cross. I hope it brings you peace and happiness.”

“By the way, how’s your fiancé? Is he good to you?”
Raelyn’s nose tingled with emotion as she gave a genuine smile.
“I’ve never met him, but he’s a good man-a soldier who sacrificed himself for his country.”
“Even if he doesn’t love me, I believe he won’t treat me badly.”
“What do you mean he doesn’t love you?”
Knox’s voice came from behind her.
He must have gotten the information from Skylar and followed her here. Looking inquiringly at Raelyn’s expression, he said to the
director: “Don’t worry, I’m Raelyn’s fiancé. I’ll take good care of her after we’re married.”
The director looked confused. “But Ray-Ray said her fiancé was…”
Seeing Raelyn’s numb expression, she ultimately sighed and said nothing more.
Knox and Raelyn walked out of the orphanage side by side. He handed her a medicine bottle.
“You mentioned stomach pain before. I got this prescription from a friend.”
Raelyn clutched the bottle in her hand.
The label indicated it was just a common stomach medication, but what Knox didn’t know was that during Raelyn’s days spent in the library, she had read many medical books. The ingredient list clearly showed one herb that would cause unconsciousness if consumed in large quantities.
Knox had prepared a two-pronged plan.
If Raelyn took the sleeping pills, she would be delivered to the Blackstone family without knowing.
If she refused, Lord Kingston’s men would tie her up and force her there.
Raelyn almost wanted to laugh.
The man didn’t realize that all his efforts were in vain.
After returning home, Julian rushed over in a hurry.
“Bad news. The Blackstone family sent word that their young master was admitted to the ICU last night. The doctors say his condition isn’t good.”
“They want us to bring the bride over first thing tomorrow morning.”
