Chapter 5

The moment I sent the message, Autumn called.

I answered, but it was Logan’s angry voice that came through.

“Was that really necessary, Rayna? So I missed our appointment at the registry office-it’s not like I was canceling altogether. Did you have to block me on everything?”

“And I only missed it because Autumn got sick! We can get our marriage license anytime, but her health couldn’t wait!”

“Then you sent Autumn a fake marriage certificate claiming you married someone else? How old are you, playing childish games like this? It’s ridiculous!”

“Before I really lose my temper, just unblock me and let’s move past this.”

I listened quietly until he finished.

“You’re right. I should add you back. Because even though we’ve broken up, we still have some accounts to settle.”

“Park my car in my garage and leave the keys with the security guard.”

“You’re taking back the car just because I drove Autumn to the hospital this morning? Seriously, Rayna, could you be any more petty?”

“I’m not returning your car. Stop bringing it up every time we have a fight. You’re really pissing me off now!”

“You won’t return it? Fine, I’m calling the police.”

I didn’t waste any more words. I hung up and called the cops.

They were impressively efficient, quickly apprehending Logan and impounding my car.

Not a while, Logan called me in a panic: “Rayna, you actually called the cops? Are you insane? Get down to the police station right now and tell them this was all a misunderstanding!”

After hanging up, I turned to Nate. “Let’s go to the station and get my car back.”

“As you wish, my dear wife!” he replied with a grin.

Nate drove me to the police station where Logan was visibly agitated.

“Officer, my fiancée is here!” he exclaimed when he saw me.

The officer looked at me. “Did you file the report?”

“Yes, I did. I lent my car to this man, but when I asked for it back, he refused and said he would never return it.”

“Officer, don’t listen to her! She’s my fiancée-we just had a fight. She bought that car for me to drive. I didn’t steal anything!”

“You’re my ex-boyfriend at best,” I said coldly.

I took back my car keys, then turned and left with my arm linked through Nate’s.

The police, seeing we obviously knew each other, released Logan as well.

Logan chased after us. “What are you doing with Mr. Sullivan?”

I looked at Nate, confused. “You two know each other?”

Nate seemed equally surprised. “I’ve only heard about him from you.”

Logan smiled ingratiatingly. “Mr. Sullivan, I’ve seen you in financial magazines.”

“You seem quite close with my fiancée. This is great-we’re practically friends!”

“Who’s friend with you?” I leaned my head on Nate’s shoulder.

Logan’s eyes nearly popped out. “You and Mr. Sullivan are…”

“Didn’t you see our marriage certificate? We’re legally married now.”

Logan suddenly laughed. “Wow, Rayna, I’m impressed. You actually got Mr. Sullivan to play along with your act!”

“If you had these kinds of connections, why didn’t you tell me earlier? Do you have any idea how hard I’ve been trying to secure a partnership with Sullivan Corp?”

“I’m giving you an easy way out here-let’s all have dinner together. I’m being the bigger person!”

“I’m extending an olive branch here-say something!”

Nate looked at Logan like he was an idiot. “Your ex-boyfriend… did his head get caught in a door or something?”
