Hunter neither agreed nor refused, departing in silence.
Before leaving, he left me a black card with unlimited funds.
Shortly after, both families bombarded me with text messages.
My mother even threatened suicide.
“You’re thirty years old with two kids. Where will you find security like the Mitchell family after divorce?”
“Your father’s and my business depends entirely on the Mitchells. If you dare get divorced, I’ll kill you first, then jump off a building myself.”
I replied with a dismissive “whatever” and blocked both their numbers.
Seeing this approach fail, Hunter brought Ryan and Maya to see me.
Both children had lost a considerable amount of weight and burst into tears upon seeing me.
“Mommy, we know we were wrong! Please come back–we miss you so much!”
“Daddy keeps staring at your photos and sometimes he secretly wipes away tears.”
“He’s completely cut ties with Aunt Sloane, and we’ve learned our lesson. Please don’t be angry anymore. Won’t you come
home?”
During this time, Sloane had contacted me to apologize for Ryan’s allergy incident.
She explained that the twins‘ classmates had discovered their lies, resulting in them being ostracized at school.
Hunter was too busy with work and couldn’t find a suitable nanny, so he’d sent the children back to the Mitchell estate.
The strict rules there made Ryan and Maya miserable every day.
But with no one indulging them, their bad behavior had improved somewhat.
I knew, however, that their tears now weren’t from genuine remorse. They simply realized that besides me, no one would love them unconditionally.
“I’m not your mother,” I stated coldly.
“Have you forgotten? You wished I would die so you could get a new mommy to replace me.”
Ryan and Maya cried even harder.
Even Hunter couldn’t bear to watch.
He pulled the children behind him protectively. “They’re just kids. Do you really need to be so harsh with them?”
“They’re your children now, not mine. I have no reason to keep indulging them,” I replied.
“Your lawyer has already sent over the divorce agreement. I’ve reviewed it and found no issues. I hope you’ll sign quickly

rather than wasting both our time here.”
“You know, no matter what you do, I won’t go back with you?
Hunter unconsciously clenched his fists.
With lingering reluctance, he asked, “What if I told you I could change?”
“After you left, I realized… I’ve always cared about you.”
I couldn’t help but laugh.
“Hunter, you think too highly of yourself.”
“I admit, at first I did love you. But being with you taught me the meaning of ‘all that glitters is not gold.”
Beneath Hunter’s polished exterior lay a selfish, cold, and callous man.
He might be an excellent businessman, but he was far from an excellent husband.
Someone so petty could never make anyone happy.
In the end, Hunter’s negotiation attempt failed.
He didn’t love me as much as he’d imagined.
He simply couldn’t function without my care.
Faced with my determination, he had no choice but to concede.
I relinquished custody of the children and walked away with nothing.
The day we returned to finalize our divorce, Sloane sought me out.
After exchanging brief pleasantries, she vented her frustrations.
“The ink on your divorce papers isn’t even dry, and they’re already pressuring me to marry Hunter.”
“In their eyes, as long as the Parker–Mitchell partnership stays intact, nothing else matters.”
It didn’t matter who married Hunter.
Whether they were happy didn’t matter.
As long as the family alliance remained strong and the children were cared for, that was enough.
If one daughter wouldn’t comply, they’d move on to the next.
In the end, someone else would make the sacrifice, and the families would benefit.
“Will you accept?” I asked.
Sloane quickly denied it.
“Of course not! What’s so great about Hunter? He’s rigid and boring.”

“As a friend, he’s fine. For a lifetime? No thanks.”
“But I’m really curious–how did you convince Hunter to agree to the divorce? I’ve asked him countless times, but he refuses to
tell me.”
Thinking about it made me smile.
“I had a fake paternity test made. I told him if he didn’t agree to the divorce, I’d announce to the world that the twins weren’t his children.”
The information was completely fabricated.
But neither the Mitchell family nor Hunter could afford such a scandal.
As the next in line to inherit the family business, Hunter would never risk the family’s interests.
Upon hearing this, Sloane doubled over with laughter, applauding my cleverness.
After chatting briefly, we parted ways, each flying to different destinations.
As my plane took off, I glimpsed a burst of fireworks exploding above the Mitchell estate.
Vibrant and colorful, they spread across the sky like a sea of flowers.
It seemed like Hunter’s belated apology.
I took a deep breath and closed my eyes.
Letting the plane carry me toward a brand–new future.
