Chapter 9
I thought Kestrel had spared me.
I thought he’d leave me alone.
So I was stunned when he called for me to accompany him on the royal hunt.
A man who loathed my people–why would he bring me to an event meant for beloved wives?
Then again, I was his only ‘wife‘–a political burden thrust upon him.
Not like he had a choice.
But the deeper we rode into the woods, the more I sensed something was off.
I turned–only to find the dozens of riders who’d been with me had vanished.
I called out for Kestrel, but there was no answer.
Then I heard it–a low, guttural growl from the trees.
My horse reared in terror.
Then I saw it—a wolf.
