“Ms. Johnson! What about the DNA test? It’s said that you had an affair with multiple men, and Mr. Johnson had provided
DNA test results to prove your daughter wasn’t his. What do you have to say for yourself?” A man shouted, and the woman stumbled over the last step, her lawyer barely catching her
The jacket shifted slightly from the movement, and I held my breath as I waited to get a glimpse of her.
“Damn, the kid? That blows for him, but we all know Caleb was jumping from bed to bed, too. I didn’t even know he was
married until now.” Bash shook his head in disappointment.
“He’s lying!” Bailee Johnson repeated as her lawyer yelled, “No comment”
“How did scumbag Caleb Johnson manage to get married before any of us?” Mason laughed as he gave up on the other
women in the room and set his sights on the bartender.
“Tm never getting married,” I said, clenching my jaw as I took a deep breath through my nose.
“That’s because no woman wants to put up with your ass for more than a month.” Mason laughed.
“Fuck off.” I said absentmindedly, too distracted by the television as the camera panned back to the courthouse in time to see
Caleb Johnson throw the doors open with a giant smile stretched across his face.
“I believe her,” Bash said, gesturing to the screen with his glass. “His wife ex–wife. If she said he was lying. I believe her. The man doesn’t have a trustworthy bone in his greedy body. I wouldn’t put it past him to have lied to save himself from having to pay her a cent in the divorce.”
I gave the cameras a feigned gracious “I was just thinking the same thing.” I said as Caleb placed his hand over his heart and gave smile. He thanked everyone for their support as he navigated such a difficult time, and I grumbled my annoyance
Prick.
“You thinking what I’m thinking?” Bash asked, and I nodded as Mason leaned over him to rejoin our conversation
“That Alex needs to get laid? Yes. Absolutely.” Mason laughed, looking between us before following our gaze to the television
screen. “What did I miss?”
I finished my drink and waved to the bartender for another. “Ms. Johnson just might be the one we’ve been looking for to get
rid of Caleb Johnson once and for all.”
I watched as the camera moved back to Bailee as she climbed into her car, lifting her head just enough to glare at her ex- husband, flashing a familiar pair of green eyes that made my breathing catch in my lungs as her lawyer slammed the door in
her face
It couldn’t be.
It was
Those eyes had been burned into my memory since I was a teenager
“How do you plan to find her? Private investigator?” Mason asked, but I shook my head.
“No need I know who she is,” I said as the bar door opened, letting a cool breeze into the room.
The hair on the back of my neck had risen, and my heart started beating faster. It was like my body knew who had entered
the bat before I did.
“Ballee The bartender called out excitedly, waving over the only woman I had ever loved. The woman who loved me before I had money and fame.
Bailee Evans.

From the comer of my eye, I watched a woman run forward, leaning over the bar to hug the bartender.
The scent of sugar cookies and vanilla hit me, and I took a deep breath.
Fuck.
She even smelled the same as the last time I had seen her. How w was that possible?
“Bailee?” I breathed out her name, stunned. Her hair was lighter than it used to be, just as I had seen on television, and she had dark circles around her haunted green eyes.
Bailee’s face hardened, her eyes narrowing as recognition flashed in them.
I moved to stand, unsure what to say but before I could leave my barstool, Bailee pulled her arm back and threw it forward.
Mason and Bash hollered in amusement as I caught her fist just before it would have connected with my face.
