Chapter 210
“Yeah.” Matty nodded earnestly. “He isn’t good to you, and you aren’t happy with him. So I don’t want you two to be together. You deserve someone better. You deserve a happier life.”
Sharon let out a quiet, almost helpless laugh.
Even Matty-who had barely spent any time with Carter-could see how badly he treated her.
Wendy turned to her. “Since you’re not free tomorrow, should I tell John to reschedule?”
“No need,” Sharon said. “We’re just filing for the divorce cooling-off period. It won’t take more than half an hour. Can you tell John I’ll be free to rehearse in the afternoon?”
“Sure.” Wendy picked up her phone and lowered her head to send a message.
Matty, curious, asked, “Sharon, where are you and John performing?”
Sharon thought back to what Uriah had said. “It’ll probably be at a nursing home or somewhere like that.”
Matty’s eyes lit up. “Sharon, can I come with you? I want to perform too-can I?”
Sharon hesitated. If it were a gig she had full control over, letting Matty perform would’ve been fine. But this one was organized by Uriah. It wasn’t her place to make that decision.
Seeing her hesitation, Matty added seriously, “I’ve been practicing violin every day. I promise I won’t hold you back.”
Sharon softened. “I can’t make that call. But I’ll ask Mr. Malcolm for you tomorrow and let you know, okay?”
Matty’s eyes sparkled. “Okay!”
He loved performing with Sharon. Nothing else made him feel that kind of joy.
She gave him pride-like when he won first place. She gave him comfort-like when his mom was still around.
He really, really didn’t want to let go of her.
He made up his mind right then and there. He’d do everything he could to treat Sharon well. He’d win her over.
The next morning, Sharon woke early, not wanting to be late.
After checking-again-that she had all the necessary documents, she headed out.
Carter was the kind of man who cared deeply about punctuality. Unless it was Kelly, he wouldn’t wait for anyone.
Worried about traffic, Sharon left well in advance.
By the time she arrived at the courthouse, it was only 9:10 a.m.
She stood outside the building, waiting calmly.
At exactly 9:00 a.m., Carter picked up his car keys and was just about to leave when his phone rang.
“Carter, you need to come now! Kelly slipped in the shower and fell-she’s unconscious and being rushed to the hospital!”
His face darkened. “How bad is it?”

“It’s serious! I called her name over and over. She wouldn’t wake up! I’m in the ambulance now-please, hurry!”
“I’m on my way.” His voice turned cold and clipped. Without another word, he left the villa
10:05 am
Sharon stood at the entrance of the courthouse, frowning slightly as she glanced at the time.
It was already past ten. Where was Carter?
Maybe traffic? Or something had come up?
She gave it some thought and decided to wait ten more minutes.
But fifteen minutes went by. Still, no sign of him.
Not even a text. Not a single call.
If something had really come up, the least he could do was call, right?
Unless… there was an accident?
Unease stirred in her chest. She lifted her phone and dialed his number.
Ring after ring, no one picked up.
Her fingers tightened around the phone. Could something really have happened?
Just when she was about to give up hope, the call finally connected.
Carter’s voice came through the line.
