Chapter 211

“I’ve got something going on today… I probably won’t be able to make it…”

Before Carter could finish his sentence, Nate’s voice came through the phone, interrupting from the other side.

“Carter, Kelly’s out of emergency care now. Come see her, quick…”

Kelly?

Of course. How could she forget?

Every time Carter broke a promise, it was always because of Kelly.

Sharon felt no waves in her heart anymore. Her voice was calm and distant.

“She’s already out of surgery. If you have time this afternoon, just drop by. Don’t worry, it won’t take long…”

But again, before she could finish, Nate’s voice cut in.

“Carter, why are you still on the phone? Kelly keeps calling your name-she needs you right now!

The doctor said her condition isn’t good this time. If something really happens, today might be the last chance you get to see

her!”

“…Alright. I’m coming.” Carter’s voice turned cold and sharp.

Just as he was about to hang up, he suddenly remembered Sharon on the other end.

“I’m busy right now. I’ll call you back later.”

The line went dead.

Carter turned to Nate. “How is Kelly?”

Nate glanced at the phone in his hand. A faint trace of satisfaction flickered in his eyes, but his face wore a serious look.

“Not great. The doctor said… with her current condition, she probably won’t last more than six months.” 1

Carter’s brows furrowed slightly. “You still haven’t found that alternative medicine specialist?”

.”I did.”

“Then why haven’t you brought him in to treat Kelly?”

At the mention of this, Nate’s expression grew irritated.

“That old man refuses to come! No matter what price I offer, no matter what terms, he just won’t show up to treat her! Isn’t that infuriating?”

“Did he name any other conditions?”

“No.” Nate shook his head. “I’ve never met anyone so bizarre. He says he’s retired, but he still runs this shabby little traditional medicine shop. I’ve even seen people coming by for prescriptions now and then.

“And when I begged him-literally begged him-he wouldn’t even budge. I’ve gone to see him three times. It’s unbelievable!”

Nate’s face hardened.

“Hmph. I’ll go again tomorrow. If he still acts high and mighty, I’ll just drag him back myself.”

Carter’s gaze darkened. “Have you ever brought Kelly to see him in person?”

Nate blinked, caught off guard. “…No.”

“Did he ever say you weren’t allowed to bring her?”

“I don’t think… he ever said that.”

“Then why not try bringing her there directly?”

Nate scratched his head. “Kelly’s condition, as you know, needs long-term care. I was hoping to hire him as her private doctor.”

Carter’s steps were steady. “Maybe he wants to treat others too, and doesn’t want to be tied down. Bring Kelly to him in person tomorrow. See how he responds.”

Nate’s eyes shifted. “Well… I kind of cursed him out yesterday. Thought he was heartless. If I bring Kelly now, he might refuse just out of spite. Maybe… you should go instead?”

Carter gave him a long look but didn’t respond.

The two of them reached the door to Kelly’s hospital room.

When they opened it, they saw that she was already awake.

Her eyes lit up slightly when she saw Carter, but the spark faded quickly, like a candle snuffed out by wind.

“Carter… I’m sorry. I’ve troubled you again. If you have work to do, go ahead. I’m… I’ll be fine.”

A shadow passed through Carter’s eyes.

He thought of Sharon.
