Chapter 213

On the other end of the line, Carter’s voice came through, tinged with weariness. “You’ve called me so many times. Is it something urgent?”

Sharon’s voice was cool and flat. “Carter, did you forget we’re supposed to get divorced today?”

There was a pause-several seconds of silence.

“I didn’t forget,” he said at last. “I told you just now. Something urgent came up. I couldn’t get away.”

Told her?

Sharon let out a cold laugh in her mind.

If she hadn’t called, would he have said anything at all? He’d already pushed her completely out of his thoughts.

But they were getting divorced anyway. She didn’t see the point in arguing.

What mattered now was getting him to show up and finalize it.

“When I called earlier, Kelly had already come out of the ER. You’ve been with her all morning. You should be free this afternoon, right?”

The words hit Carter differently. They carried a tone-faint, maybe imagined-something like jealousy.

He asked suddenly, “You want me to come that badly?”

Sharon frowned. There was something off about the question.

“We agreed yesterday, didn’t we?” Her voice dropped a degree colder. “Carter, don’t tell me you’re backing out now.”

A beat passed before he spoke again. “I understand. I’ll come.”

But Sharon didn’t let her guard down. “What time?”

“I’ll call you when I’m done here.”

She didn’t buy it. “I want an exact time.”

He was quiet for a few seconds, then said, “Two o’clock.”

“I hope you mean it this time, Carter. Don’t go back on your word again.”

With that, she ended the call without hesitation.

After hanging up, Sharon stared at the phone for a moment, thinking, then dialed another number.

“Wendy, can you find out which hospital Kelly’s in right now?”

Wendy had worked as a talent agent. Her connections didn’t run as deep as Carter’s or Xavier’s, but they were still better than

most.

She understood immediately. “No way-Kelly had another episode?”

“Yeah.” A faint crease appeared between Sharon’s brows. “Carter didn’t turn up this morning. I’m not even sure he’ll show this afternoon. If he doesn’t, I’ll go find him at the hospital myself.”

That divorce was happening-one way or another.

“Got it. I’ll have someone check. I’ll text you as soon as I find out.”

At the hospital.

Nate watched Carter step out of the exam room to take a call. His eyes darkened. Without hesitation, he followed. 1

He had a feeling-It had to be Sharon on the other end.

As he approached, he heard Carter’s voice, low and steady.

“You want me to come that badly?”

“I’ll come.”

“Two o’clock.”

It didn’t sound like a divorce arrangement. It sounded like he was making plans for a date.

Nate kept his tone casual as he stepped closer. “That was Sharon again, wasn’t it?”

Carter slipped his phone into his pocket. “How’s Kelly doing?”

“Not great. The doctor said they’re not even sure if she’ll be well enough for the concert.”

Nate gave him a pointed look. “You know Kelly’s always had poor health. Lately she’s been exhausted-emotionally and physically. She’s even been taking care of Theo for Sharon. That’s only made her condition worse. She kept it from us. I didn’t think it was this serious. But the doctor said they still need to finish the full tests before anything’s confirmed.”

No matter what, he couldn’t let Carter leave today.

“I’ll stay here while she finishes the tests,” Carter said. “But I have to step out for a bit later.”

Nate frowned, clearly displeased. “Her condition’s already getting worse, and you’re still leaving? What could possibly be more important than Kelly’s health?”

Carter’s eyes were like deep, impenetrable water.
