Loving Mom 215

Chapter 215

In this day and age, divorce had become a nearly impossible task.

Her lawyer had already told her more than once: if it could be helped, a divorce by mutual agreement was the fastest and

cleanest way out.

If she chose to go through legal proceedings, just the court review alone would take about six months. And if she wanted to divide property, given the complexities of the Biggs family’s assets, it might stretch to nine months or more.

Before even getting to court, they’d first have to go through mediation-at least another month. Only if mediation failed would the court officially file the case.

The lawyer politely said to her, “Even if both of you eventually agree to the divorce, because there’s a child involved and Mr. Biggs hasn’t committed any serious offense, the court is very likely to deny the request.” (1

“I know that sounds ridiculous,” he added. “But this is the reality. I’ve handled divorce cases for years-this kind of situation is more common than you’d think. If you want the quickest way out, negotiating is still the best route.”

Sharon asked, “The evidence I’ve gathered-could it prove he’s at fault in the marriage?”

The lawyer shook his head. “Not really. Nothing you have clearly proves infidelity. And even if there was cheating… legally speaking, it wouldn’t necessarily affect how the assets are divided.

“Unless you catch them in bed or can prove they’re living together and publicly calling each other husband and wife-then you might have a case for bigamy. Then you might be able to negotiate for a bit more. But getting him to walk away with nothing? That’s simply not going to happen.”

Before any of this, Sharon had never imagined how convoluted and unreasonable divorce law could be.

It wasn’t until now that she realized the idea that “bad people get what they deserve” was just a moral comfort found in stories. In real life, bad people often didn’t suffer. Sometimes, they even lived better than anyone else.

Half an hour later, Sharon arrived at the hospital.

She already knew from Wendy which room Kelly was in.

The elevator climbed slowly to the top floor.

The moment the doors slid open, two bodyguards standing on either side stepped forward and blocked her path.

“Sorry, Sharon. This floor has been reserved. No unauthorized entry.”

She stopped in her tracks. “Reserved by who?”

The bodyguards had clearly been briefed. They didn’t hesitate.

“Nate Hendricks.”

Nate? He really had gone all in just to stop her from finding Carter-he’d even reserved the entire floor.

She glanced toward the corridor and saw two more guards at the stairwell.

So, they were guarding every entrance. Making sure she couldn’t even use the stairs.

Sharon let out a soft laugh, quiet and without warmth. She didn’t argue, just turned and walked away.

Nate had clearly done everything possible to prevent her from seeing Carter today.

She didn’t wait around the hospital. She left right away. She knew Nate would definitely have someone tailing her. If she fingered there, he’d make sure Carter never walked out of that hospital.

When she opened the door, Wendy was sitting on the couch in the living room.

Seeing Sharon’s tired expression, she quickly put the pieces together.

“Carter bailed on you again?”

Sharon nodded. “Yeah. But this time it was mostly because of Nate.”

“Nate?” Wendy’s eyes narrowed.

Sharon told her the full story.

Wendy couldn’t hold it in. “That idiot Nate!”

Sharon leaned back on the couch. “I’ll try to reach Carter again tomorrow. I don’t believe Kelly is on the verge of death every single day.”

Wendy muttered a few more curses under her breath before remembering why she’d come over in the first place.

Her face lit up. “Oh, right! Sharon, I came here to tell you some good news!”
