Chapter 223
Kelly paused for a beat, then continued, “I heard… the sudden onset of my illness the other day disrupted your date with Sharon. Carter, since she’s already found her way here, why don’t you go with her? Nate is here with me. It’s the same either way.”
Carter’s dark eyes chilled like frost, the sharp edge of winter settling behind his gaze.
Over the past few days, Nate had been feeding him thoughts, drip by drip, until even Carter had started to believe that Sharon had only asked to meet so she could see him-like it was a date.
Or maybe, deep down, he just didn’t want to believe that she genuinely wanted a divorce.
His voice was cold. “Sharon, I can’t stand clingy women.”
Sharon had finally had enough of this entire circus act.
“What is it with you people? I said I wanted a divorce, and here you are going on about dates, playing hard to get-do you not understand words, or is there something wrong with your brains?”
At that moment, Uriah, who had been watching the whole drama unfold from the sidelines like someone enjoying a snack during a good show, finally decided he’d had enough.
He spoke slowly, almost lazily. “You three have really misunderstood things today. This girl here, my little apprentice-I called her yesterday and asked her to come help me.”
All three turned to stare at him.
Kelly hesitated before asking, “Mr. Malcolm… you know Sharon?”
“Of course,” he said, raising his brows. “Didn’t I just say that? I asked her to come. Are your ears just for decoration?”
Nate still looked doubtful. “Did you just say… Sharon is your apprentice? That can’t be right. She’s just a housewife. What does she know about medicine? And if you do know her… don’t tell me the two of you cooked up this whole act just to scam us?”
Uriah gave him a long, peculiar look. “Has your brain taken a swim in open water recently? If Sharon and I really wanted to trap you, wouldn’t it make more sense to keep her hidden? Why would I invite her over and then tell you we’re setting you up? You think that makes sense?”
Nate fell silent. He had no comeback-because no sane person would be that stupid.
Carter had assumed Sharon had followed him here. He never expected that she actually knew Uriah.
Which meant… had he misunderstood her just now?
And yet, even with that realization, Carter didn’t feel any relief. Instead, an odd restlessness stirred in the pit of his chest.
He looked at her, eyes unmoving. “Why didn’t you ever tell me you knew Mr. Malcolm?”
Sharon blinked, genuinely confused. “Why would I? How was I supposed to know you were looking for him? Did you ever ask me?”
The truth was, when it came to anything about Kelly, Carter never told her a thing. Even if she asked, he’d just shut down the
conversation.
And now, he was blaming her for not mentioning it? Unbelievable.
Carter seemed to realize that, too-that there was no way she could’ve known they were searching for the miracle doctor. Still, a sliver of doubt remained lodged in his mind.
How did you two meet?” he asked.

Uriah answered casually, “Oh, two years ago. She came to me for medicine, for her mother in law. That’s how we met.”
Carter turned to face him fully.
“When we came yesterday… did you know who I was?”
