Chapter 231

Before Carter could respond, Sharon ended the call.

Kelly stared, caught off guard by how abruptly Sharon had hung up.

What was that about? Did Sharon use her as an excuse just to talk to Carter? Even if he came, it would be for her-what did it have to do with Sharon?

After the call, Sharon turned back to the table and calmly resumed lunch with Uriah and Theo.

Kelly touched her empty stomach. She hadn’t eaten all morning, thinking she’d have lunch with Carter. But instead, she ended up stuck here, thanks to Uriah.

Still, it wasn’t all bad-Carter would be coming soon. That was why she hadn’t stopped Sharon from making the call.

Now he’d see for himself how she’d been wronged.

An hour later, Carter arrived.

The three at the table had already finished eating.

Matty was picking through herbs. Sharon sat nearby, quietly grinding medicinal ingredients. And Kelly, the “patient,” sat in a chair, glancing toward the door every few seconds.

The moment she saw him-tall, composed, walking in with long strides-her eyes lit up.

“Carter, you’re here!”

Carter looked at her hand. “Is the wound serious?”

Startled, Kelly quickly hid her hand behind her back, like a frightened rabbit.

“No… it was just a little scratch. It’s already healed…”

But Carter frowned and reached for the hand she was hiding. He pulled it out.

Then paused.

There was nothing. No wound, no redness. Her skin was smooth, exactly as she’d said-already healed.

He turned sharply toward Sharon, who was still grinding herbs.

“You were messing with me?” His voice was low, cold.

Before Sharon could respond, Matty spoke up from the side.

“Mr. Biggs, why are you accusing Sharon without even asking what happened? It was Kelly who came over saying she was in pain. She told us her condition was special, that she might start bleeding uncontrollably.

“She even said that last week, when she cut her finger, you panicked and rushed her to the hospital. Said you were so worried you had a blood pack prepared just in case.

“But then some patient at the hospital had massive blood loss and they gave that blood to them. And you got so mad you fired all

the doctors on the spot.”

Adults can lie. Kids usually don’t.

Carter didn’t fully trust Matty, but everything he just recited were details only he and Kelly would know. (1)

He didn’t need anyone to tell him whether it was true or not.

Just then, Uriah came out from the back, holding a few bottles of medicine.

“Ahem. Kelly did say all of that. That’s why we didn’t dare touch her hand.”

Carter turned to Kelly, his gaze dark and impenetrable. “Kelly. Is that true?”

Kelly instinctively clenched her fists. She’d almost forgotten-everyone here was on Sharon’s side. No one would speak up for

her.

Her mind spun. Quickly, she came up with a reason.

“I’ve always heard that medicine is, by nature, toxic. I accidentally got a cut from one of the herbs and I got scared. I really did worry about infection… And I only mentioned the hospital stuff to Sharon because little Matty said he never cries when he gets hurt. He said I’m worse than a five-year-old. I was just trying to explain…”

She lifted her eyes to Carter. “Besides… I never said anything bad about Sharon. You’re the one who came in and accused her without asking anything first…”
